AS Monaco claimed victory over Bordeaux 2-1

Up against a solid Bordeaux outfit, the Red & Whites claimed a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Mbappé and Moutinho.

Perhaps inspired by former AS Monaco ‘keeper Flavio Roma, who took the symbolic kick-off at the start of this game, Bordeaux began with a very defensive set-up. The result was a lengthy spell of attack vs. defense, albeit with the visitors ready to counter whenever the opportunity presented itself. AS Monaco delivered a succession of corners and crosses into the box, but were unable to make the breakthrough before half-time, with space and chances for the strikers at a premium. Fabinho did make a great piercing run in the 26th minute, with Mr. Buquet denying the home side a penalty, while Jemerson (40 mins) and Lemar (41 mins) both had shots that found Carrasso in the way.

MBAPPÉ UNPICKS THE LOCK!

The score was goalless at the break, but the Red & Whites were determined to up the pace after half-time. Germain met a good cross from Mbappé but sent his effort just wide (48 mins). Just before the hour mark, from one of AS Monaco’s many corners, a header from Mbappé was cleared off the line by a defender, and moments later Germain was close to getting on the end of a fine cross from Moutinho. AS Monaco finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, as Falcao – who had only just come on as a substitute – got his head to a deep corner from Moutinho. The ball found its way to Mbappé who side-footed past Carrasso. Bordeaux were rattled, and things got worse for them in the 74th minute when Moutinho served up a gem for the delight of the Monegasque fans.

MOUTINHO FINDS THE TOP CORNER!

From a pull-back from Silva, the n°8 curled a splendid strike into the top-right hand corner of Carrasso’s net. It was an incredible effort, and put daylight between the two sides. There was still time for some late drama as Rolan beat Subasic who had come outside his area after a poor back pass from Jemerson. The Girondins didn’t look entirely convinced they could get something from the game, and the Red & Whites ultimately saw out the last few minutes of the game comfortably to claim a 2-1 win. The only black mark on the afternoon was a knock picked up by Falcao right at the end, forcing the Columbian to leave the pitch holding his ribs… Ahead of the visit of Manchester City on Wednesday evening in the Champions League last 16 second leg, AS Monaco are doing the job in League 1 and now have a five point lead over Nice and six points over PSG, who play later.
