A Ukrainian driving a Bentley makes a U-turn right inside of the Rainier-III tunnel in Monaco.
The double underpass connecting the Principality to the Moyenne-Cornicheonly allows you to drive one way.
When the police were checking stability of the road traffic, their control screens displayed a vehicle that was heading back to Monaco in the forbidden direction! At the risk of causing a serious accident on this spiral track, with fatal consequences for drivers and passengers going in both directions.
Arrested in time to prevent the irreparable, the driver was interrogated on the Public Security premises. “This 40-year-old man” commented the police chief Jérôme Fougeras Lavergnolle, “did not know the area and was looking for his hotel. Having lost his way, he followed his passenger’s suggestion to turn around. He was driving with an alcohol level of 0.53 mg per liter of exhaled air, after a bottle of white wine shared by two. ”
He told the inspectors that he did not realize he was driving in a forbidden direction…
At the same time, he was unable to present his driver’s license. The due check with the authorities, however, proved him to be a holder of a valid document.
According to the police chief, this case was the one to send shivers down his spine. He found it difficult to understand the mere possibility of driving in a forbidden direction in that tunnel.
The driver was summoned to appear before the Criminal Court, but could not be present on a pretext of being away…
The Prosecutor Cyrielle Colle is also skeptical: “The alcohol level in the blood is not very high. Did he get mistaken with the road as he claims? The offense is serious. It would require an 8 days imprisonment with a suspended sentence, a fine of 150 euros for driving in a forbiddendirection and a penalty of 45 euros for not producing the driving license.”
The court, however, ruled the accused to pay a 2.000 euros fine for drunk driving, plus two fines of 45 euros.
