SUMMARY:Exhibition of Alfredo Volpi\, The poetics of color
DESCRIPTION:The NMNM presents the very first retrospective in a public institution outside Brazil of Alfredo Volpi: a major Brazilian artist born in Lucca (Italy) in 1896 and who moved to São Paulo’s Cambuci Italian neighborhood in 1898. Alfredo Volpi died in 1988 in São Paulo. \nThe aim of the exhibition is to retrace Volpi’s career\, starting from his early oil paintings in the ’40s – mostly landscapes and ‘cityscapes’ – to the works of the ’50s\, ’60s and ’70s\, in which the same subjects are metamorphosed into colorful geometric compositions\, oneiric archetypes of the façades of buildings and festive banners\, and a humble and poetic ‘algorithm’ that gives Volpi the chance to make infinite color variations on the same subject. \n\nThe exhibition features more than 70 works retracing the history of this independent and self-taught painter\, whose fascination for the Italian early Renaissance\, for Matisse\, Morandi and the sphere of popular culture led him to win the Best National Prize at the 2nd São Paolo Biennale with ‘Di Cavalcanti’\, and intrigued the celebrated English critic Herbert Read\, who described him as an artist “… aware of the general movement\, but who created something contemporary with an indigenous theme: the shapes and colors of Brazilian modern architecture.”\n\nVolpi is probably the most-loved Brazilian artist of the 20th century\, but has remained little known outside of Latin America until now.

DESCRIPTION:The 71th annual Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to be held from 8 to 19 May 2018. Cate Blanchett\, an internationally acclaimed actress and producer of both stage and screen\, a recipient of two Academy Awards has been selected as the President of the Jury for the festival with Edouard Baer hosting the opening and closing ceremonies. This year’s forthcoming Festival de Cannes will open with a screening of Asghar Farhadi’s new film Everybody Knows (Todos Lo Saben) in Competition at the Grand Théâtre Lumière in the Palais des Festivals on Tuesday 8 May. \nThe Cannes Film Festival is an annual film festival held in Cannes\, France\, which previews new films of all genres\, including documentaries\, from all around the world. Founded in 1946\, the invitation-only festival is held annually (usually in May) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. The festival will be celebrating its 71th year.

DESCRIPTION:Les Imprévus (“The Unexpected”) (3) — “Young Choreographers\,” in partnership with the Pavillon Bosio-ESAP\, Monaco\, performed by the Compagnie des Ballets de Monte-Carlo from Wednesday 9 May to Friday 11 May\, Atelier des Ballets de Monte-Carlo. \nIt is never possible to predict what Jean-Christophe Maillot and his 50 dancers prepared behind the doors of the Atelier for The Unexpected … More than ever\, this popular rendezvous is a “breathing” in the programming of a particularly dense season. One of the objectives of these Unexpected performance is also to prepare the public of tomorrow\, a true leitmotiv for Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. This implies a form of education in choreographic art. Jean-Christophe Maillot wishes it as lively as possible. Nothing better than The Unexpected to achieve this goal\, when your feet almost touch the stage. More than a show\, The Unexpected is a moment of exchanges at the end of which you won’t see dancers and choreographers in the same way ever again.
