SUMMARY:Opera de Monte-Carlo: Così Fan Tutte
DESCRIPTION:Opera de Monte-Carlo: Così Fan Tutte on Monday 09 February 2026 at 7 pm in Salle des Princes – Grimaldi Forum Monaco. \nSurely\, you attended the first and second visit of the Vienna Staatsoper to Monaco! And surely you marvelled as much as we did at the unforgettable beauty of the Vienna Staatsoper Orchestra’s sound and the youthful freshness of the company’s soloists. Now\, they return with Così fan tutte\, the third and last part of Mozart’s famous da Ponte Trilogy\, performed in a semi-staged version at the Grimaldi Forum. \nWhereas Le nozze di Figaro is based on Beaumarchais’ comedy\, and Don Giovanni on a play attributed to Tirso de Molina\, the story of Così fan tutte seems to be Lorenzo da Ponte’s invention. For many years\, Emperor Joseph II was thought to have suggested its subject to Mozart\, but more recently sketches from the first act have been found which give evidence that da Ponte first provided the libretto to composer Antonio Salieri. \nFor much of the 19th and 20th centuries\, this opera was seen as inferior because its topic was considered immoral – two friends seducing one another’s fiancée in order to test their fidelity. But the philosophical question put before us remains relevant especially in our more permissive time: is eternal love a fantasy\, or can it be real? Will Mozart’s sublime music help you come to a conclusion? \nDramma giocoso in two acts\nMusic by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\nLibretto by Lorenzo da Ponte\nPremiere: Vienna\, Burgtheater\, 20 January 1790 \nTickets starting at 40 €

SUMMARY:Cecilia & Plácido Recital
DESCRIPTION:Mezzo-Soprano Cecilia Bartoli & Baryton Plácido Domingo Recital will be held on Saturday 14 February 2026 at 8 pm in Opéra de Monte-Carlo. \nCecilia Bartoli and Plácido Domingo first met in New York\, where they each performed regularly to enthusiastic audiences. In 1994\, they recorded Mozart’s Idomeneo together for Deutsche Grammophon\, accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Since then\, their paths have crossed frequently. \nWithin their extensive respective repertoires\, Cecilia and Plácido share a particular affinity for Mozart\, Rossini\, and Vivaldi. And although Puccini operas\, often performed by Plácido\, are not among those in which we usually hear Cecilia sing\, it was in Tosca that she made her first public solo appearance as a child. This work is set in Rome\, his hometown\, which is also the setting for the film Tosca\, in which Plácido filmed in authentic sets recreating the era of Puccini’s opera – a striking coincidence! \nIn 2023\, on the stage of the Palais Garnier\, Plácido Domingo paid tribute to Cecilia Bartoli\, then recently appointed director of the Monte-Carlo Opera. Together\, and accompanied by other enthusiastic artists\, they presented a lyrical epic that will long remain in the memories of those fortunate enough to have witnessed it. \nTrue to their Mediterranean warmth\, their musical versatility\, and their captivating charisma\, Cecilia and Plácido now offer a more intimate format celebrating their Latin heritage. For these musical pieces\, they will be subtly accompanied by the French pianist David Fray\, who shares with them a great love for Italy and Spain.

SUMMARY:Pelléas and Mélisande by Claude Debussy in the Monte Carlo Opera
DESCRIPTION:Pelléas and Mélisande by Claude Debussy will be on stage of the Monte Carlo Opera on February 22\, 24 (gala)\, 26 and 28\, 2026. \nMusical direction: Kazuki Yamada\nStage direction: Jean-Louis Grinda \nSunday\, February 22\, 2026 – 3 p.m.\nTuesday\, February 24\, 2026 – 8 p.m. (Gala)\nThursday\, February 26\, 2026 – 8 p.m.\nSaturday\, February 28\, 2026 – 8 p.m. \nClaude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande\, the most iconic French opera of the 20th century\, was first performed in Monaco in 1924. Its music is impressionistic: the vocal parts are written to reflect the natural dialogue in a sustained manner\, while the orchestral score abounds with shimmering colors and nuances. The story is based on Maurice Maeterlinck’s eponymous play\, a seminal work of Symbolist theater. It unfolds in an imaginary medieval world and contains the fundamental elements of myth and fairy tale: a dark castle and forest\, a stern father and two brothers—one eager to please but unloved\, the other sensitive and charming—a blonde princess of unknown origins who becomes the victim of sibling rivalry\, and a deep well into which she first drops her crown\, then her wedding ring. The events unfold before us as if in a dream\, with the constant feeling that the important things are never truly said. \nThis new production from the Monte-Carlo Opera promises to be an exceptional collaboration\, bringing together\, among others\, Jean-Louis Grinda\, Kazuki Yamada\, and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Among a cast of leading singers\, we are pleased to present the Monte-Carlo Opera debuts of Lea Desandre\, Huw Montague Rendall\, and Gerald Finley.
