DESCRIPTION:In June 2018 the New National Museum of Monaco (NMNM) will exhibit a series of works by Tom Wesselmann at Villa Paloma. \nFrom Friday 29 June to Thursday 31 January\, from 10 am to 6 pm Nouveau Musée National – Villa Sauber: Tom Wesselmann exhibition – The Promise of Happiness \nNamed The Promise of Happiness\, the exhibition will revolve around the career of this pop art singer\, highlighting his immense contribution to the taboo subject of sexuality. The exhibition takes its title from Stendhal’s celebrated claim that “Beauty is but the promise of happiness.” \nConcentrating on the artist’s portrayal of women\, which has been known to draw fire for its purported objectification\, this exhibition argues for a much more nuanced understanding of the Wesselmann’s rapport with the female subject. Indeed\, through this survey\, a certain sense of female agency will become apparent\, which in itself is symptomatic of a crucial historical shift from Victorian repression to the abundance associated with postwar American consumerism\, as both are described and quite literally embodied in Wesselmann’s work. Long considered one of the key American Pop artists as well as one of its great formal innovators\, Wesselmann’s specific critical contribution to the movement has been a subject of debate for decades. This survey intends to clarify this debate\, locating his prodigious and penetrating contribution to the taboo subject of sexuality\, portrayals thereof\, and its inseparable link with the boundless promise conveyed by the cultural\, material and economic bounty of postwar American society.   \nSource: www.e-flux.com \n

Prince Anthony I particularly appreciated his music\, and two letters kept in the Palace Archives testify to his great admiration for this exceptional composer. Couperin composed a delightful piece for his daughter – The Princess of Chabeuil\, or the Muse of Monaco. This concert recreates a service from the time of Prince Anthony I\, with a men’s choir alternating with the great organ.

Intimacy and politics are intertwined in these destinies\, which are shattered by the conflicts between the United States and the Taliban. \nAccording to Frédéric Grosche\, the director\, “The challenge of this proposal is to find\, in the way the actors play their parts\, this permanent oscillation between life and death\, illusion and truth\, real and fantasy\, the continuous dosing of which leads to this overwhelming awareness.” \nThis poetic writing denounces the absurdity of war and the trap of religious fanaticism. \nThe author is represented by Renauld & Richardson in French-speaking countries\, in agreement with the Knight Hall Agency London. \nFrom 12 years of age (1 hour)

DESCRIPTION:“Jean-Paul II – Antoine Vitez\, Rencontre à Castel Gandolfo” (“John Paul II – Antoine Vitez\, Meeting at Castel Gandolfo”) by Jean-Philippe Mestre in association with the Diocese of Monaco\, organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs on Thursday 12 July\, at 9.30 pm\, Fort Antoine. \nOn 28 July 1988\, the Comédie-Française gave a private performance of “Mystère de la charité de Jeanne d’arc” (“Mystery of the Charity of Joan of Arc”) by Charles Péguy to Pope John Paul II in the gardens of Castel Gandolfo. Antoine Vitez\, the administrator of the Comédie-Française\, was keen to be on board. \nAt the end of the performance\, a wide-ranging discussion took place between Pope John Paul II and Antoine Vitez\, in which many topics were addressed: the theatre\, actors\, the inquisition\, power\, science\, Communism\, the Church\, etc. Following this discussion\, the novelist Jean-Philippe Mestre had the idea of immersing himself in the writings of these two people and imagining a dialogue between John Paul II and Antoine Vitez\, which is transcribed in this play. \nFaith in God?
