SUMMARY:Exhibition “Conquêtes Pacifiques\, les extensions en mer à Monaco”
DESCRIPTION:The Direction des Affaires Culturelles is organising an exhibition entitled “Conquêtes Pacifiques\, les extensions en mer à Monaco”\, from 15 October 2021 to 2 January 2022\, at the Salle d’exposition du Quai Antoine Ier. \nThe new exhibition was inspired by the donation of a private collection of photographs depicting land reclamation projects. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition invites visitors to explore these geopolitical\, social\, urban\, technical\, and ecological adventures – in short\, the human stories upon which Monegasque culture is built. To that end\, it brings together a large collection of cartographical\, photographic\, and audiovisual archives\, along with various plans and models. In addition\, the exhibition’s organisers interviewed a number of the people behind these land reclamation projects\, and those who use these new living spaces today\, to get their personal impressions.

SUMMARY:Tribute to Joséphine Baker at the Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo
DESCRIPTION:Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer pays tribute to Joséphine Baker on November 30\, 2021 at the American Bar of the Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo. \nNovember 30\, 2021 represents a historic date with the entry of Josephine Baker into the Pantheon\, a great activist for the cause of women and minorities. On this occasion\, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has decided to pay tribute to her during an evening at the American Bar at the Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo. This mythical place\, which has hosted the greatest personalities\, will be the perfect stage for this moment of tribute to the jazz singer. This evening\, hosted by an orchestra and a conference by a journalist\, Axel Jaffray\, will be an opportunity to (re) discover a woman of character in a symbolic place of the Principality of Monaco. \nTo pay tribute to Joséphine Baker\, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has chosen an emblematic jazz venue in Monaco\, Le Bar Américain. At the heart of the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo\, it has been frequented by the world’s greatest personalities. The singer’s most famous arias will be performed by a jazz band. Unpublished archive photographs will be shown throughout the evening in the room.

SUMMARY:Rita Ackermann at Hauser & Wirth gallery in Monaco
DESCRIPTION:For its second exhibition in the Principality\, the Hauser & Wirth gallery is delighting us with a Hungarian artist and New York resident\, Rita Ackermann until December 23\, 2021. One would struggle to describe the emotions you experience in front of her unclassifiable canvases\, with their jostling lines and dripping colour. It is definitely magic coming from the artist’s very heart. \nHer large-scale series “Mama” seem to be specially designed for this immaculate space where skylight is falling from the very ceiling. This is\, perhaps\, a key to understanding a skin-deep sensitivity at the heart of her art… You really have to dig\, go beyond colour\, through the layers\, colliding and revealing a painting as if in spite of itself\, like a mirage. The artist speaks to her mother daily. Bending on the floor to cover her large canvases with oil and acrylic\, she feels protected with an aura. \nUsing a brush or her fingers\, building up the material or removing its excess\, this is how Rita Ackermann is juggling her paintings. Call it some kind of a fight or oscillation between figuration and abstraction. When the graphics finally appear under the layers of colour\, they reveal delicate lines in contrast with the powerful flat strokes. “The painting keeps everything well hidden\, surrounded by a great secret … No need for sophistication. Art does not require complex thought\, but sincerity”. These few words truly sum up her art. No artifice or concessions to be up-to-date. Simply sublime. \nHauser & Wirth\nOne Monte-Carlo\, Place du Casino\, Monaco\nTel +377 0200 0420

SUMMARY:“Moi\, Je”: UMAM artists defy narcissism at Cagnes-sur-Mer castle
DESCRIPTION:There are so many different ways of looking at yourself and asserting your ego\, ideas\, convictions\, personality… Since the dawn of time\, artists have been caught in this trap: introspection or openness? According to Simone Dibo-Cohen\, curator of the UMAM (Mediterranean Union for Modern Art) Biennale\, held until January 3\, 2022 at Cagnes-sur-Mer Castle\, “Moi\, je” is a figure of speech extensively used by each of us. A blistering of an ego\, of an identity. A recurring theme in the history of art.’ \nThe aptly named exposition brings together some forty artists\, titillating their narcissistic inclinations: Jacky Ananou with the “The Narcissistic Knot”\, Jérôme Borel appropriating “The confusion of Narcisse”\, Pierre and Gilles using Matthieu Charneau’s model to embody “Narcisse”. Others like Philippe Cognée\, Mick or Cedric Tanguy have chosen a self-portrait to shout out their “I\, Myself”. As to Bernard and Gérard Taride or Gérard Haton-Gauthier\, they are using a metaphore to illustrate the concept of egocentrism.  \nAll the artists in any case played the game\, giving the best of themselves to make it a real success. And don’t miss out on some internationally renowned works by Gérard Garouste\, Damien Hirst or Jeff Koons. \nChâteau-Musée Grimaldi\n6\, Place du Château\, Cagnes-sur-Mer\nTel +33(0)4 9308 6712

SUMMARY:Yann Arthus-Bertrand in the heart of Nice
DESCRIPTION:A fantastic walk across continents in the greenery of the Promenade du Paillon in Nice until January 16\, 2022. Striking images of Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s colossal project “The Earth seen from the sky” are revealing the fragile beauty of our planet: animals going about their day\, men working in the fields\, mega-cities growing like mushrooms. All these seemingly immortal landscapes are at the mercy of cyclones\, floods\, earthquakes and climate change. These aesthetic emotions thus bring the audience to the awareness of the ecological emergency we are facing. \nThe purpose of this film director and photographer honoured by the city of Nice is not about blaming our society\, but encouraging us to have another outlook on the world\, change our ways. \nWildlife is Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s favourite theme. His exhibition on Gauthier Square\, at the entrance to Old Nice\, features some fifty images from his “Bestiaux” series\, while Charles Nègre’s Museum of Photography gives a retrospective of this committed artist’s path. In a nutshell\, we also get introduced to his new film “Legacy\, notre heritage” presented this year at the Cannes Film Festival. These are incredible images at the service of a sensitive vision of our world which\, in a generation\, has largely deteriorated. A must-see for the whole family. These kind of images are more striking than long speeches. \nPromenade du Paillon\nPlace Pierre Gautier\nMusée de la Photographie Charles Nègre\n1\, Place Pierre Gautier\, Nice\nTel +33(0)4 9713 4220\nhttps://museephotographie.nice.fr/

SUMMARY:Thursday Live Session with Joao Selva
DESCRIPTION:Thursday Live Session with Joao Selva on Thursday 2 December 2021\, at 6:30 pm\, in the Grimaldi Forum Monaco – Espace Indigo. \nSon of a pastor from Ipanema\, João Selva grew up in Rio de Janeiro in a community of former prisoners and converted artists. In his childhood\, he played his first notes on a guitar under the watchful eye of Wand Sa – one of Bossa Nova’s iconic figures. The influence of his father\, a music lover and collector of records of all sorts\, led him to further his knowledge of Brazilian music\, specializing in the practice of Capoeira Angola\, Samba de Roda\, Maracatu or Coca de Roda. At the age of 18\, he began a career as a travelling artist playing music hall shows for children in Africa\, South Africa and the Carribbean – before settling down in the city of Lyon\, many years later. His decisive meeting with the prolific producer Bruno Patchworks led him to launch his solo career. In 2021\, João Selva returns with a second album Navegar\, a true hymn to creoleness and tropicalism\, embued with flavors of funk\, jazz and disco. \nFree admission

SUMMARY:Two Concerts of Baroque Music
DESCRIPTION:Department of Cultural Affairs presents two concerts of baroque music at Chapel of Mercy for the first time this year – Tuesday 30 November and Thursday 2 December\, 8.30 pm. \nOn Tuesday 30 November 2021\nJosquin Desprez\, the universal\, Pange lingua! Sing\, O my tongue! \nBy the Ensemble Clément Janequin \nDominique Visse\, countertenor and leader; Olivier Coiffet\, tenor; Vincent Bouchot\, baritone; Renaud Delaigue\, bass; Yoann Moulin\, positive organ \n2021 marks the commemoration of 500 years since the death of Josquin Desprez\, the iconic Renaissance composer who contributed to the flourishing of music during this period\, breathing new life into polyphony. To celebrate this anniversary\, the Ensemble Clément Janequin is putting on a programme comprising the famous Missa Pange Lingua interspersed with extracts of its recording of Tylman Susato’s Septiesme Livre de Chansons (1545). The recording and the programme highlight the diversity of Josquin’s chansons\, as well as the melancholy\, despair and regret that are so often part of his work.Founded in Paris in 1978\, the Ensemble Clément Janequin focuses primarily on the secular and religious music of the Renaissance\, from Josquin to Monteverdi. The group’s performance of sixteenth-century Parisian chanson has helped to revive interest in one of the golden ages in the history of French music. The Ensemble Clément Janequin also performs contemporary music and presents programmes spanning the Renaissance period to the modern day. \nOn Thursday 2 December 2021\nLamento d’Arianna – Italian madrigals by Rore\, Gesualdo and Monteverdi \nBy the Ensemble Profeti della Quinta \nDoron Schleifer\, David Feldman\, countertenors; Lior Leibovici\, Loic Paulin\, tenors; Elam Rotem\, bass and leader; Orí Harmelin\, chitarrone \nThis programme transports listeners to Italy\, to the era of the madrigal\, one of the most significant genres of secular vocal music of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The madrigal offered Renaissance composers a new way to express poetry and the emotions it evokes through music\, a practice introduced by Cipriano de Rore (1515–1565) and later known as seconda prattica. This paved the way for the development of a new musical language and the first operas\, which could already be seen in some compositions by Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643). \nThe Ensemble Profeti Della Quinta was founded in Galilee\, Israel\, by singer and harpsichordist Elam Rotem. Today\, the group is based in Basel\, Switzerland\, where its members completed a course of study in early music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In focusing on a repertoire from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries\, the ensemble aims to create vivid and expressive performances of the music of yesterday for the audiences of today.

SUMMARY:The Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival: Paul Personne
DESCRIPTION:Paul Personne will be in concert at the Opera Garnier Monte-Carlo on December 3rd as part of the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival! \nHe is THE guitarist recognized by the greatest\, Paul Personne always knew how to mature his difference: his warm voice married to the sounds of guitars. The label of bluesman certainly sticks to him\, but the artist is nevertheless an exceptional melodist with obvious talent. Initially addicted to the drums\, an instrument he tinkered with himself as a child\, it was the guitar though that became his faithful companion. \nInvited in 1987 to participate in the Quebec City Summer Festival\, where the public’s reception was extremely warm\, the author-composer was convinced that his music was better expressed on stage than in the studio. He recorded his first live album during his concert at the Olympia in 1991 and was awarded the Bus d’Acier\, the Grand Prix of French rock\, the same year. Seduced by the greats\, it is Eddy Mitchell and Johnny Hallyday who passed on to him their taste for the rock through the radio\, he joined them on stage with the titles “Excuse-moi partenaire” and “La Musique que j’aime” in Francofolies of 93. \nAfter his last album Puzzle 14 and the live tour “Electrique Rendez-vous”\, he recorded Lost in Paris Blues Band in 3 days in Paris with American musicians. Furthermore\, Paul Personne comes back with a new album written\, composed and recorded between Normandy and Brussels: Funambule: a warm and electric album reflecting his sensations and feelings about the world around him\, around us and evoking themes dear to him. \nFriday\, 3 December 2021 8:30pm €65 \nSource: www.montecarlosbm.com \n@SBM

SUMMARY:The Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival: David Hallyday
DESCRIPTION:To your agendas! Come and meet David Hallyday on December 4 at the Opera Garnier Monte-Carlo for a guaranteed magical evening… \nHe is the (famous) son of two French legends and own producer of his twelve albums. The musician multi-instrumentalist was rocked since the beginning by the melodies of his parents. David Hallyday is passionate about music since childhood\, influenced by The Rolling Stones\, Elton John\, David Bowie or Pink Floyd\, he learns drums\, piano and guitar in self-taught. The 13 years old boy went on stage at the Pavillon de Paris to play the drums and accompany his father on a song of his show. His first album\, True Cool\, released in 1988\, confirmed his success and the single “High” remained number one in the French top 50 and in the top 30 in the United States for several weeks. \nAfter several albums (Rock’n’Heart\, On the road\, 2000 BBF\, Novacaine)\, he is rewarded at the NRJ Music Awards for the best male artist of the year for his opus Un paradis / un enfer released in 1999. He sings in duet with his half-sister Laura Smet on the track “On se fait peur” from the album Disque d’or Un nouveau monde. This album\, more intimate\, and on which David Hallyday plays almost all the instruments\, marks a turning point in his career. Recognized author-composer\, he composes for his mother (Sylvie\, Soleil bleu)\, his father (Sang pour Sang) and many interpreters (Florent Pagny\, Anggun\, Grand Corps Malade…). \nHis practice of Buddhism for over twenty years also plays a major role in his relationship with the world. \nOn stage at the Opera Garnier Monte-Carlo\, the artist will present his latest creation Imagine un Monde\, through which he expresses his desire to see further\, higher\, beyond fear and resignation. \nFriday\, 3 December 2021 8:30pm €75 \nSource: www.montecarlosbm.com
