Amels unveils 67m Aurora Borealis first known as Project Waka

Dutch yacht builder Amels has unveiled its first Amels 220 superyacht, Aurora Borealis in Vlissingen. Previously known as Project Waka, the 67.1-metre yacht is to become the first unit out the yard’s new Limited Editions motor yachts line 220.

Tim Heywood, a designer responsible for the whole Limited Editions portfolio with Amels, has trademarked the vessel with extended decks and a 65-square-metre swim platform and beach club area. Still, as a hallmark of Amels, the yacht is promising to provide highly efficient cruising experience relying on the expertise of the entire Amels fleet.

The project was overseen by Antoine Larricq from Fraser, representing the owner in terms of interior design. The interior concept was developed by Winch Design. With interior volume of 1,500 GT, her interiors of nearly 1,150 square metres feature seven luxury guest suites, able to accommodate up to 14 guests, along with 15 crew members.

The yacht is fitted with stern garage capable to store two 8-metre tenders and variety of water sport toys and exploration craft. Aurora Borealis is reported to be fuel efficient, with her Full Displacement Hull Form. She will reach her maximum speed at 17 knots, cruising comfortably at 15 knots with the power of Caterpillar engines.

The yacht is scheduled for delivery in summer, during the Mediterranean yachting season. She represents an evolution of the Amels 212 model of which three units have been launched since 2011.

Sea life inspiration: 63m superyacht concept Hypnosquid

Italian designer Roberto Curtó has presented his latest superyacht concept named Hypnosquid. The 63.2-metre project was inspired by sea life, especially by elegant though agile nature of the cuttlefish.

Roberto Curto’s design brand makes its specialty in marine design, along with interiors, domestic products, furniture, cars and motor bikes. The new concept with aluminium hull and superstructure was developed in collaboration with brokerage company SuperYachtsMonaco. According to the latter, the design has attracted attention of several Northern European shipyards.

Hypnosquid’s main exterior trademark are naturally her coloured LED windows, dotting across the main deck. They are conceived to represent Hypnosquid’s eyes. Other glass windows should ensure bright saloon interiors.

The vessel of a 13.7-metre beam and a 2.9-metre draft would feature interior volume of 1,050 GT. She would offer accommodation to up to 10 guests, with a “Duplex” master suite. The owner’s bedroom is laid upstairs, with a library and lounge zone moved downstairs. What is more, the suite would encompass a full beam lobby and a garden. The lower deck meanwhile would host guest cabins.

The yacht’s main deck is trademarked with full-beam lounge and game area designed for poker game sessions.

Philippe Briand presents 90-meter sailing megayacht concept

Philippe Briand unveiled the latest concept of a sailing yacht from his London-based design studio: a 90-meter (300-foot) SY300. With a traditional sailing rig, the 1,550-tonne ketch has created to surpass other sailing megayachts on the water today, as well as provide dizzying comfort on board. The previous concept of the famous designer 30-meter “Egoist” was introduced in 2017.

Driven by the wind, the SY300 will become a true leader in the new wave of “green” superyachts. Due to its hydrodynamic efficiency, it is possible to charge more energy through underwater turbines to charge batteries on board. Under the best conditions, a maximum speed of 20 knots will be achieved.

Guided by a desire for efficiency, Philippe Briand chose a conventional sailing rig with two masts to complement the modern hull with an upturned nose, since this turns out to be the most effective. Its main height rises 95.3 meters above the waterline, the SY300’s upwind sail area is 3,560m2, while its downwind sail area is 6,600m2, including a 3,500m2 spinnaker.

The construction of carbon fibre masts and rigging is largely based on the experience Philippe Briand gained during the development and construction of the two most famous sailing yachts in the world: the 67-meter S/Y Vertigo and the 73-meter S/Y Sybaris.

The length of the yacht at the waterline is 78 meters, and the maximum beam is 14 meters. The design includes three roomy decks and ample space for guests. On each deck, there is a swimming pool with sun loungers. A huge dining table with removable bimini in the centre of the flybridge seats up to 16 guests. The relaxing area has two L-shaped sofas with low tables, and a more secluded seating area on the front deck is ideal for secluded relaxation.

Hessen 50m superyacht Masa launched

Dutch yacht builder Heesen has announced the launch of a new YN 18750 unit at the company’s Oss facility. The 50m vessel first known as Project Aster, was christened Masa by her owner.

Masa, meaning my diamond, represents the eighth yacht in Hessen 5000 Aluminium Class. The latter has proven to be one of the most successful ranges by Heesen among the builder’s sporty and semi-displacement motor yachts.

Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, responsible for the vessel’s exterior lines, reflected Heesen’s DNA through a pelican-beak bow with reverse sheer and a sporty mast.

Masa’s naval architecture was developed by Heesen’s in-house team. The vessel with interior volume of below 500 GT features a fully-aluminium semi-displacement hull. Thanks to her lightweight aluminium construction and two MTU 16V 4000 diesel engines, Masa will reach top speed at 23 knots.

Meanwhile, the interior concept by Cristiano Gatto celebrates the lineage of Masa’s predecessors. Fresh and elegant décor combines light colours palette with silver. The guests of up to 12 people will find accommodation within five lower deck suites and a master stateroom on the main deck, accompanied by nine crew members.  Three lounges and three dining rooms, a bar and a top-deck open-air Jacuzzi will be also found at the guests’ disposal.
