AS Monaco 0-3 FC Porto

AS Monaco went down to a 3-0 defeat at the Stade Louis-II against FC Porto. Aboubakar, who scored a brace, and Layun grabbed the goals for the visitors.

After drawing their opening match in Leipzig a fortnight ago (1-1), the Red & Whites hosted FC Porto in the second game of the Champions League group stage. The home side showed a threat from the start, as Ghezzal picked up the ball in the Portuguese box and found Falcao, but the Columbian’s scuffed shot was held by Casillas (4’). With a quarter of an hour gone, Brahimi darted deep into the Monegasque defence and crossed for Marega who was lurking on the penalty spot, but Jemerson intervened at the last moment. It was a tight contest, but while Monaco were seeing more of the ball, it was Porto who broke the deadlock. On the half hour mark, Aboubakar pounced on a poor clearance to beat Benaglio, despite the ‘keeper making two stunning saves in quick succession. AS Monaco went in 1-0 down to the Portuguese side at half-time.

There was a change for the home side at the break, as Carrillo came on for Diakhaby. The first clear chance of the second half came on the hour mark, as Aboubakar ran onto a through ball and held off Jemerson before unleashing a shot that was held by the ever alert Benaglio. Ten minutes later, Aboubakar doubled FC Porto’s lead. Sent into space by Brahimi, Marega outpaced Jemerson and laid the ball on for his teammate in the box to make it 2-0. Lady luck was definitely not with the Monegasques tonight, and Falcao was unfortunate to hit the crossbar with an inspired effort with the outside of his right boot. Layun netted a third for the visitors in added time to complete a 3-0 defeat for AS Monaco, who have just one point after two matches of this season’s Champions league group stage. Their next match is on Friday (20.45) when Montpellier visit the Stade Louis-II for Ligue 1 matchday 8. Daghe Munegu!
