AS Monaco were beaten 2-1 by Besiktas

AS Monaco were beaten 2-1 at home by Besiktas in the third match of the group stage, with the Turkish side surging to the top of Group G.

Top spot in this group moved further out of reach on Tuesday evening with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Besiktas Istanbul. Yet things had started well for the Monegasques as they took the lead. Keita Balde went on a darting run forward and laid the ball on perfectly for Radamel Falcao, who showed his class by leaving Pepe in his wake to finish with a toe-poke into the far corner (1-0, 30’).

But just four minutes later, Tosun headed an equalizer for the Turkish side (1-1, 34’). And the visitors added a second just after the break, as Babel – from an offside position – set up Tosun to slot past Subasic (1-2, 54’).

AS Monaco will reflect ruefully on Keita Balde’s mis-shot in the box after a wonderful piece of skill from Rony Lopes (64’). The result complicates the task of qualifying, although Leipzig’s victory over Porto (3-2) offers a glimmer of hope. The Germans are now second with four points, while the Portuguese side remain on three points with the Red & Whites on one. Anything is still possible with three group games to go.
