FC Porto needed a victory to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, and they had it wrapped up by half-time, as they went in 3-0 to the good thanks to a brace from Aboubakar (9’ and 33’) –as in the first game between these sides- and a side-footed finish from Brahimi just before the break (45’). Both scorers previously plied their trade in Ligue 1. Ghezzal and Felipe were given their marching orders in the 38th minute by Swedish referee Mr Erikssen after a flare-up between the two players.

In the second half, the Red & Whites created a number of promising openings, but efforts from Lopes, Diakhaby and Meité all lacked accuracy. After Kongolo made a wonderful intervention to deny Marega (56’), the Monegasques did deservedly pull one back through Glik’s penalty (61’). Four minutes later, Telles beat Benaglio with a long-range strike that went in off the post (65’). The home fans gave a warm welcome to Falcao and Moutinho as they came off the bench, and El Tigre managed to net a lovely header (78’), his third goal in the three Champions League matches, a first for him. FC Porto’s record goalscorer in European competition (22 goals) was given an ovation by the entire stadium as he made it 4-2. But the game finally ended 5-2 after Soares headed in late on (89’).
