Where to go in Monaco: Monaco Cathedral

It is a special pleasure to walk down the narrow streets of the oldest district of Monaco, Monaco Ville. In the daylight, Monaco-Ville is packed with tourists but at night this old area seems deserted. But no matter where you are going in Monaco Ville, all roads lead to the main Cathedral.

The magnificent white stone building looks fairly old, though it was only built in 1875. It is widely believed that the Cathedral stands in a sacred place, as there was a previous medieval church, destroyed during Revolution of 1789.

The Cathedral of Monaco is located on one of the highest and most beautiful spots of the Principality. Its interior is decorated with altarpieces of the French artist Louis Brea.

Every National Day or religious holiday is celebrated here with organ music performances. By the way, the impressive instrument was installed almost 40 years ago. Every summer the International Organ Festival takes place inside the cathedral’s walls. This amazing event is traditionally open to the public.

Besides holding worship services and mass, the cathedral houses the tombs of the former Princes of Monaco and other members of the royal family. There are 35 generations of the House of Grimaldi buried beneath the cathedral. The well-known former Hollywood actress Grace Kelly was laid to rest next to her husband Prince Rainier III. You can always see red and white roses on their graves and a lovely tribute to the Princess.
