MATEO tango opera is on stage of the Fort Antoine Theatre from 12 to 14 September 2025.
Mateo is a tango opera by Argentinian composer Martin Palmeri and directed by Carlos Branca.
The cast consists of seven international opera singers, two dancers, a string quintet, a pianist, two bandoneon players, and a choir.
The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century during Argentina’s industrial revolution. A moving epic where the struggle between tradition and progress highlights the sacrifices of a father and the hopes of a new generation. The rhythm of tango and the vocals of verismo opera blend to create a so-called “grostesco” opera where humor and tragedy alternate harmoniously.
