100th Anniversary of a Monaco Opera plagued by Scandal

Orfeo ed Euridice by Christoph Willibald Gluck will be on stage of the Monte-Carlo Opera on Wednesday 28 January 2026 at 8 pm.

Azione theater per musica
Music by Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787)
Libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi
Atto d’Orfeo taken from Le feste d’Apollo (Parma version, 1769)

During his journey to the Underworld, Orpheus, the Thracian singer, appeases the demons and the god of the dead with his music. This myth is one of the most popular of ancient Greece. Over the centuries, it has been celebrated in thousands of books, poems, paintings, ballets, films, songs, and, of course, operas. Claudio Monteverdi’s Orfeo (1607) is considered the first example of its kind. It must be particularly fascinating to compose about a character whose strength lies in the beauty of his singing, as the quality of his music must stand out from the rest of the opera.

But the aspect of the myth that generates the most romantic fantasies in the minds of both composers and audiences is that the purpose of this journey is Orpheus’s desperate attempt to bring his beloved wife back from the world of the dead. The power of the music becomes a symbol of the power of love, a feeling that makes men invincible.

Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice is presented in a staged version based on the Salzburg Festival production, created for our performers and acclaimed by audiences! In this form, the work has been presented with remarkable success in some fifteen European concert halls since November 2024. It is therefore high time to share this wonderful experience with you, our Monegasque audience.
