Monaco’s 16th annual “1 Birth = 1 Tree” ceremony took place at Princess Antoinette Park on 30 April. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Georges Marsan, several government councillors, and families who had a newborn in 2024.

This year, 721 trees, corresponding to the same number of births recorded in Monaco in 2024, were planted in the Pali state forest. This brings the total number of trees planted since the start of the operation to 15,000, and majorly contributes to the reforestation of the surrounding areas of the Principality.

“New this year, a drought-tolerant Judas tree, or Silicastre tree, was symbolically planted in the park, opposite the “Làscia e Piya” shared library, to mark this 16th annual event,” said the Mayor’s office in a recent press release.

The operation, initiated in 2008 and sponsored by HSH Prince Albert II, is part of the global ‘Plant for the Planet’ campaign, which aims to plant one billion trees. Conducted with the National Forestry Office, the event highlights the Principality’s dedication to environmental causes, forestation, and the preservation of natural heritage.

Since 2020, the project has taken on a new dimension as part of the ‘Ilot d’Avenir’ program, which aims to introduce tree species which are more resistant to new climatic conditions.

“This approach aims not only to restore forest plots but also to serve as a model for sustainable reforestation that can be replicated on a larger scale around the Mediterranean,” said the Mayor’s office in a recent press release.

Last year, to celebrate the event’s 15th anniversary, a ceremony was held at the model-making circuit on the La Turbie road, which was the site of the first planting. Children for whom trees were planted 15 years ago attended the ceremony.
