On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, just two days ahead of the world-famous Monaco Grand Prix, the Principality swapped race suits for football kits during the inaugural Racing Stars Football Cup — a one-of-a-kind charity match that lit up Stade Louis II with star power, purpose, and passion.
Organized under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the event saw the iconic Barbagiuans of Monaco take on the equally renowned Nazionale Piloti, in a festive showdown that united motorsport legends, professional footballers, artists, and entertainers. At the heart of it all stood Louis Ducruet — President of the Barbagiuans and the visionary behind this revamped charity tradition — whose tireless efforts brought together an eclectic and electric roster of talent.

Taking to the pitch were celebrated figures including Ludovic Giuly, Matt Pokora, UFC fighter Benoît Saint-Denis, comedian Paul Mirabel, influencer Ragnar Le Breton, and Formula 1 stars Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz, and Isack Hadjar. Their presence transformed the football field into a stage of camaraderie and goodwill, as fans witnessed a rare spectacle of celebrities playing for a cause rather than a cup.
The match was held in support of two deeply meaningful organizations: the Jules Bianchi Association, which continues to honour the legacy of the late F1 driver, and Be Safe Monaco, a foundation that educates young people about the dangers of drunk driving — a cause especially close to the hearts of the Monegasque community.

Royal Kick-Off
The ceremonial kickoff carried immense emotional weight, led by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie, hometown hero Charles Leclerc, and two-time F1 World Champion Mika Häkkinen, who also served as ambassador for the event. Their presence underscored the symbolic link between Monaco’s royal, racing, and philanthropic traditions.
While the pre-match energy was celebratory, the competition quickly heated up. In front of over 3,200 enthusiastic fans, the Barbagiuans delivered a masterclass in flair and teamwork.

Man of the Match
Former Uruguay international Javier Ernesto Chevanton stole the spotlight with a spectacular hat-trick, earning the Man of the Match honour and a warm congratulation from Prince Albert himself. Despite a spirited penalty by Pierre Gasly that momentarily narrowed the scoreline, the Piloti couldn’t keep up with the Barbagiuans’ offensive rhythm, who sealed a 6–4 victory after two fast-paced halves.
More than just a football match, this event marked a rebirth. Though charity matches involving the Barbagiuans have been held for over three decades, this new format — fusing racing culture with celebrity appeal — signals a bold evolution of a beloved tradition. As Monaco gears up for another high-octane Grand Prix weekend, the Racing Stars Football Cup has already made its mark, proving that the spirit of competition can shine brightest when it’s grounded in compassion.

“I’m thrilled by the excitement this match has generated,” said Louis Ducruet at the final whistle. “Seeing so many personalities come together and being able to revive, with the Barbagiuans, an event so dear to the Principality is a great source of pride. It’s been an overwhelming success, and I look forward to welcoming everyone again next year to continue the adventure and share more unforgettable moments with us.”
With its blend of sport, celebrity, and solidarity, the Racing Stars Football Cup has cemented itself as a new highlight on Monaco’s calendar — not just a warm-up to Formula 1, but a celebration of what it means to play with heart.
