A tragic road accident early Sunday morning, May 11, 2025, claimed the life of a 17-year-old AS Monaco basketball player and left several others injured. The crash occurred around 3 a.m. on the A8 motorway near Le Cannet-des-Maures as a minibus carrying members of the club’s National 3 team returned from a match against Terres Froides.
According to officials, the Renault Trafic minibus veered off the road and overturned. The Draguignan prosecutor confirmed that alcohol and drug tests for the driver were negative, and an investigation into involuntary manslaughter and injury is underway. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
The deceased player, originally from Gironde, was a standout talent in AS Monaco’s youth basketball training center and a student at Monaco’s Lycée Albert Ier in a specialized sports program. A 24-year-old teammate was seriously injured and remains in critical condition at Sainte-Anne Hospital in Toulon. Four others sustained less severe injuries.
AS Monaco Basketball expressed sorrow and extended condolences to the victim’s family and support to the injured. The wider Monegasque sports community, including AS Monaco Football and the Monaco Basket Association’s women’s team, shared public messages of solidarity in response to the tragedy.
It is reported that a minute of silence is planned to be held before the AS Monaco’s Roca Team match against JL Bourg-en-Bresse honouring the memory of the young player.
