Prince’s Palace Frescoes Reveal their Secrets Restored

The public will soon be able to witness the newest set of restored frescoes, which were hidden under layers of paint for centuries, during upcoming tours of the State Apartments, which will begin on 30 March 2026. The Bellerophon Room, formerly known as the Marble Alcove Room, is the latest area to be restored and the public will be able to see the secret frescoes during tours until 15 October 2026.

Hidden under layers of paint for centuries, the Palace’s secret frescoes were first discovered by sheer luck in 2015. Placed under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II, the conservation and restoration projects have strengthened the Palace of Monaco’s place in the history of global art.

“Behind the walls of the Prince’s Palace, rare skills are at work every day. In the former marble alcove chamber, the conservation and restoration team works with precision to preserve the historic decorations. This behind-the-scenes work is essential for passing this heritage on to future generations,” said the Prince’s Palace.

10th Anniversary Symposium

The discoveries and restoration work carried out over the past ten years will be the focus of “Images of Renaissance Sovereignty – Ten Years of Discoveries and Restoration of Frescoes in the Prince’s Palace of Monaco,” a symposium taking place from 19 to 21 March at the Oceanographic Museum.

“This symposium, organized at the Oceanographic Museum, invites you to explore the behind-the-scenes story of this modern-day ‘Odyssey’: more than ten years of research, analysis, and restoration carried out by leading experts—restorers, historians, and scientists—brought together to share their work and exchange perspectives,” said the Prince’s Palace.

Through the mythological figures of Hercules, Ulysses, and Pegasus, a whole symbolic language has been revealed, with stories that still underpin Monegasque identity today.

Major Exhibition in 2027

The symposium is a prelude to a major exhibition dedicated to the newly restored 16th-century frescoes at the Prince’s Palace, which is planned for 2027. This upcoming exhibition is expected to celebrate the conclusion of the entire restoration project.
