Prince Albert II helps Revive and Ancestral Drink from Monaco
An almost-forgotten drink, which originated in 17th-century in Monaco and made from Caribbean rum, has been revived thanks to Prince Albert II. “Mesccia” began it’s rebirth in 2021 when a team was formed with Guy Thomas Levy-Soussan. A white rum, bottled at 47°C, is now being sold in the Principality and will soon be sold in France and Italy.
It took over four years of trial and error and artisanal experimentation with about ten spirits. An attempt with sugar cane purchased in Spain was unsatisfactory in terms of quality and led the team to Haiti for “the best sugarcane in the world”. The drink’s first distillation happens in Haiti, in a 380-litre still heated by a wood fire, before it heads to the Principality for its second distillation, at the Distillerie de Monaco, on Rue de La Turbie.
