During a thunderstorm on August 28, the second day of the Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoca, a thunderstorm caused the Yacht Club de Monaco’s flagship ‘Tuiga’ to lose its mast along the coast of Minorca, Spain.
Fortunately, no one was injured. The crew thought quickly and immediately separated the rigging, a procedure that lightens the hull and allows the ship to safely return to port. The manoeuvre saved the Tuiga from suffering further damage.
Video footage of the dramatic incident has been circulating on social media, garnering many supportive comments from across the globe.
Winning 2nd place
Just five days before the incident, the Tuiga won 2nd place during the Trofeo Cormorán, organized by the Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença. The competition saw a record 40 boats competing. After their big win, the vessel and her crew headed to the Copa del Rey de Barcos de Época, organised by the Club Marítimo de Mahón.
Participating in Classic Week
The Tuiga is scheduled to participate in the 17th Monaco Classic Week- La Belle Classe, a unique event that combines maritime tradition, lifestyle and culture. Organized by the Yacht Club de Monaco, about 50 classic sailing yachts, 14 period motor-yachts, 70 vintage powerboats and a fleet of 52 Rivas will be on display in the Principality. This year’s edition also features two new exhibitions: Action! Classic Yachts on the Big Screen and Rock & Royals, a photographic series by Kos Evans.
A Legendary Ship
The Tuiga is a sailing ship built in 1908 by well-known naval architect, William Fife III. Belonging to the Yacht Club Monaco, the Tuiga is a legend in classic sailing. Commissioned by the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, the 15 metre yacht was one of the most innovative vessels of its time.
The Tuiga was lovingly restored to its former glory, becoming the pride and joy of the Yacht Club de Monaco. It recently won the “Big Boat Class” award and remains extraordinarily competitive.
After the recent incident in Spain, the vessel will undergo necessary repairs before returning to international racing.
