Art and Sport: the beauty of the gesture

Lecture “Art and Sport: the beauty of the gesture” with Serge Legat, Art historian, professor at the Institut d’Études supérieures des Arts (IESA) in Paris will be held on Monday, November 16, 2026 at 6:30 pm.
Art and sport may seem to belong to two different worlds, yet they share a common pursuit: the exploration of movement, emotion, and the act of transcending one’s own limits. Through painting, sculpture, photography, and performance, artists have frequently sought to capture the gestures of sport and the energy of the human body. In both the artistic and athletic realms, technical mastery goes hand in hand with creativity, sensitivity, and the pursuit of excellence.
The body thus becomes a language, capable of conveying strength, grace, tension, or freedom. This intersection of art and sport invites us—intuitively—to reflect on our relationship with our own bodies and with the concept of performance. Beneath every athletic feat lies an aesthetic and human dimension. From the athletes of antiquity to the soccer players depicted by Nicolas de Staël, sport has served as an enduring source of artistic inspiration.
Bridging discipline and imagination, effort and beauty, art and sport converge in a shared endeavor: to express what words alone are not always enough to convey.
