Heinrich Schütz is the greatest German composer before Johann Sebastien Bach. Some people have compared him to Claudio Monteverdi as, like the Italian, he could take inspiration from the Renaissance’s polyphony and give it a sense of liberty and fresh style that we would now call “baroque”. His expressive, even theatrical music packed with echoes and surprising colours reflects the variety of human nature in all its glory. His masterpiece is undoubtedly the Cantiones sacrae (1625): a collection of forty motets published to celebrate his 40th birthday. Les Cris de Paris will bring this rich and heady polyphony back to life in Saint Charles Church’s gleaming acoustics.
