In an intense and weather-beaten clash at Stade du Hameau, Monaco rose to the challenge to defeat Section Paloise 17-15 in the final of the In Extenso SuperSevens.
Battling against torrential rain, lightning, and a waterlogged pitch, Monaco claimed the win in the third and final stage of the tournament, setting the stage for the grand final at Paris La Défense Arena on February 1, 2025.
The atmosphere at the Stade du Hameau was electric, with more than 8,500 fans braving the elements to witness a thrilling contest. From the outset, both teams demonstrated grit and determination despite the harsh conditions, playing a fast-paced and highly competitive match. The first breakthrough came quickly, as Monaco’s Agustin Fraga stormed past the drenched Pau defense to score the opening try in just the first minute. Pau quickly responded, though, with a spectacular play initiated by Nisié Huyard’s creative offload, leading to a try by Will Maddocks. Monaco stayed ahead thanks to a powerful try by Jaime Manteca, but Pau closed the first half in dramatic fashion, tying up the score through a brilliant solo effort by Romain Lauga, who showcased his footwork to notch another try right before halftime.
The second half kept spectators on edge as both sides vied for dominance. Pau’s Toshi Butlin put the home team in front with a well-timed try, capitalizing on a gap in the Monaco defense. But as the clock ticked down, Monaco remained unyielding. In the 12th minute, Fraga broke through the Pau defense once again, scoring his second try of the match and sealing the victory for Monaco in the dying minutes.
This victory was a sweet repeat of Monaco’s 2022 triumph over Pau, proving once again that Monaco remains a formidable force in the SuperSevens circuit. Despite their strong showing throughout the tournament, Pau fell short in the final moments, unable to fend off Monaco’s relentless attack.
With this win, Monaco solidified its position as a top contender heading into the grand final at La Défense Arena. Alongside Monaco, teams like Bordeaux-Bègles, Pau, RC Vannes, Racing, and the Barbarians will also be vying for the championship in what promises to be an epic conclusion to the SuperSevens season.
