Harcourt Studio History

Created on 16 January 1934 by an exceptional woman, Cosette Harcourt, the Lacroix brothers, 2 press magnates, and Robert Ricci, the son of Nina Ricci, Studio Harcourt rapidly became the icon of refined Paris high society.  From movie stars to kings & queens, fashion and sport icons, all of them were striving for getting a portrait from Harcourt Studio.

Early in World War II, Jacques Lacroix married Cosette Harcourt in order to protect her as she was Jewish. Sadly she was forced to leave Paris and could resume her rightful place after the Liberation.

This was the Studio Harcourt golden age!  Portraits of actors and actresses were displayed in all the cinemas. 80 people were now working in the famous studio. Between 1951 and 1958, thanks to Cosette’s work, the studio processed over a 1000 (!) customers each month, which was crazy at the time!

However, the advent of the 1st Japanese reflex camera and the Nouvelle Vague began to eat away at the Studio Harcourt’s success. Cosette Harcourt died in 1976, and in 1980 the Hariri brothers breathed new life into the Studio, which then went through a series of different owners. Later, at the initiative of the French Minister of Culture, the collection of negatives and archives were bought up by the French State.

In 2007, Studio Harcourt has been bought by Françis Dagnan, with Catherine Renard as the General Manager. Both of them have revived the traditions of the Studio. This provides crucial stability and ensure a long term development for the legendary studio.
