Ballets of Monte-Carlo: Cultural Ambassadors for the Principality
Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo will be offering a particularly captivating dance program this spring and summer 2019. Highlights of the company’s next choreographic seasons include two unique creations.
The first, by Jean-Christophe Maillot, will remind audiences of the ‘F(Ê)AITES DE LA DANSE!’ An exceptional production which took place on 1 July 2017 which featured dancers from the company. Accompanied by Antonio Castrignanò and his orchestra from Apulia, they played Coré Meu by Jean-Christophe Maillot to cheering crowds at Place du Casino.
The choreographer-director of the Ballets de Monte-Carlo wanted to renew this collaboration and will be presenting ‘Dionysiaque’ in spring 2019, a creation which includes nods to Maurice Béjart. This large format ballet, which will give pride of place to collective movement, will take place in the prestigious setting of the Grimaldi Forum’s Salle des Princes.
During this same production, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo will also perform a creation by Madrid choreographer Goyo Montero. Current director and principal choreographer of the Nuremberg Ballet, Goyo Montero is above all a talented dancer who has worked for the Royal Conservatory of Madrid and the mythical Cuban National Ballet School. He is also a recurring contributor to the Prix de Lausanne. He has an ability to bring a group of dancers together by infusing them with an unusual energy through poetic and personal language. This ability prompted Jean-Christophe Maillot to invite him to Monaco.
End of Year Gala
This summer 2019, students and teachers from the Princess Grace Academy will demonstrate the fruit of a year of hard work to the public during the traditional end of year Gala. On 21, 22 and 23 June, audiences will be able to enjoy the extent of their talent through a varied program which brings together several styles of dance, from the most classic to the most contemporary, at the Salle Garnier, Monte-Carlo Opera.
Finally, as part of ‘Summer Dance!’ Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo will perform Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Taming of the Shrew, his famous choreography created for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, which won three Masques d’Or in 2015 (best choreographic show, best female role and best male role).
Throughout 2019, Les Ballets will be keen to assume their role as cultural ambassadors for the Principality of Monaco by following an intensive tour schedule. In February, they will head to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris to present ‘In the company of Nijinsky’ (accompanied by the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Kazuki Yamada). The company will then fly to more distant stages, including the Teatro Nacional in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, China, the Seoul Arts Centre, South Korea, or the Arts Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Tours will end in July at the Théâtre Antique d’Orange in France for a magical performance of Romeo and Juliet as part of the Chorégies d’Orange’ summer opera festival.
