The Cannes Film Festival is the place where celebrities bring out some of their dreamiest gowns. Here is our selection of all the best red carpet looks from the premieres that Elsa Hosk, Nicole Kidman, Winnie Harlow, followed by the most unsuccessful dresses of Uma Thurman, Kristen Stewart and others.
How you should dress for the Cannes Film Festival
1 – Elsa Hosk
The Swedish supermodel brought a touch of Cinderella magic to the premiere in a custom Alberta Ferretti powder blue off-the-shoulder gown with thigh-grazing slit. No supermodel look is complete without a slit, of course. Her old Hollywood waves, and diamond earrings finish off the fairytale look to perfection.
2 – Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidmanat the Killing of a sacred deer premiere on May 22, day 6 of the Cannes film festival was wearing Calvin Klein by Appointment. Anything that resembles Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic Sex and the City tutu look is a win.
3 – Rihanna
Rihanna at the Okja premiere on May 19, day 3 of the Cannes Film Festival was wearing a dress by Dior and Andy Wolf sunglasses. From the robe, to the all-white, to the layers of diamonds, to the shades, Rihanna brings her signature attitude to the red carpet and people are there for it.
4 – Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai wowed on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet when she wore this Cinderella-esque couture gown by Michael Cinco to the Okja premiere.
The icy blue off-the-shoulder dress was covered with beads and embroidered silver leaves and boasted a ball-worthy voluminous skirt.
5 – Victoria Bonya
At the Ismael’s Ghosts (Les Fantome sd’Ismael) screening and Opening Gala on May 17th, day 1 of the Cannes Film Festival. Model looked quite fresh in her Georges Hobeika long sleeved lace gown. This is another beautiful summer look for 2017.
6 – Elle Fanning
At the Ismael’s Ghosts (Les Fantomes d’Ismael) screening and Opening Gala on May 17th, day 1 of the Cannes Film Festival.
Unicorns, those damned mythical creatures that refuse to return to whatever enchanted forest they came from, have finally reached one of the most glamorous red carpets: the Cannes Film Festival. Elle Fanning, who arrived for the debut of her latest film, Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, wore a strapless Vivienne Westwood gown featuring a hand-painted unicorn on the train.
7 – Susan Sarandon
At the Loveless (Nelyubov) premiere on May 18th, day 2 of the Cannes Film Festival. Susan Sarandon wears a floor-length leather skirt with white button-down blazer, and sunglasses. Look from Stella Luna pumps.
Age is but a number, especially to Susan Sarandon, 70, who appears she is aging backwards, especially in her ultra-sexy Cannes Film Festival gown! Showing off serious cleavage and a ton of leg, the actress had jaws on the floor with her amazing look!
8 – Winnie Harlow
At the Loveless (Nelyubov) premiere on May 18th, day 2 of the Cannes Film Festival.
There’s never a time that Winnie Harlow isn’t completely slaying any and every red carpet she steps foot on. The ‘Loveless (Nelyubov)‘ screening during the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France was clearly no different. The model took to the red carpet in a breathtaking royal blue Zuhair Murad gown that made her look like a real life princess.
9 – Tilda Swinton
At the Okja premiere on May 19, day 3 of the Cannes Film Festival.
Tilda often flirts with androgyny – some would say that’s when she’s at her very best – but tonight she opted to indulge her fervently feminine side in her second look from Haider Ackermann. The floor-sweeping asymmetrical hem, bold shoulders and satin centre created an alluring, futuristic silhouette we would expect from the actress. Two-tone shoes and Repossi jewels completed her look.
How not to dress for the Cannes Film Festival
10 – Uma Thurman
At the Loveless (Nelyubov) premiere on May 18th, day 2 of the Cannes Film Festival.
11 – Robin Wright
At the Loveless (Nelyubov) premiere on May 18th, day 2 of the Cannes Film Festival.
The 51-year-old actress flipped the style script on Cannes dressing stepping out at the Loveless premiere in an emerald satin slip gown with an open criss-cross back. She teamed her slinky gown with platform sandals and a blue velvet Hayward clutch.
12 – Elisabeth Moss
At The Square premiere on May 20, day 4 of the Cannes Film Festival wearing Oscar de la Renta Spring 2018 Bridal gown.
She’s not the first person to do this nor is this the best iteration of this particular style trope of the wedding dress. Moreover, this jacket doesn’t look high-end enough to go with that dress.
13 – Kristen Stewart
The actress posed for photos wearing Chanel resort 2018 collection’s nude bandeaux top that had frayed edges with a tweed pencil skirt.
For her footwear, she went for a sexy sandal by Le Silla that gave her a boost in height with a 4.7-inch stiletto heel. The shoes feature black metallized material and three straps — one across the toe bed, one across the ankle and one above the ankle. Other design details include a zipper closure at the counter and cutouts that flank the foot on both sides.
14 – Eva Longoria
Eva Longoria in Pamella Roland – Cannes Film Festival 70th Anniversary Celebration. For someone who has treaded this carpet for several years, she should know that this Pamella Roland dress won’t work for Cannes. It’s far to sombre for the occasion.
