On June 27, surrounded by construction scaffolding and the promise of tomorrow, the Princess Grace Hospital Centre (CHPG) officially unveiled its five‑year vision: Ambition 2025–2030, a transformative roadmap grounded in innovation, holistic care, and ecological responsibility. Benoîte Rousseau de Sevelinges the Director of CHPG took the floor to explain the main thrusts of the hospital’s 5-year plan.
Public Health as Priority
CHPG aims to evolve from a hospital into a public‑health hub serving Monaco and its neighbouring communities. Features include a neurology unit with 14 beds which is being added to meet the demands of an ageing population.
A key efficiency drive will promote direct admission channels, reducing emergency visits. For instance, 82 % of geriatric admissions went through the Emergency Department in 2024.
CHPG is also fostering interdisciplinary care, with personalised pathways, point-of-care testing bundles, and collaborative teamwork across specialties.
Diagnose, Robotize, Digitize
Technology is at the heart of CHPG’s second ambition: medical excellence via innovation. Already an Expert Reference Centre for robotic surgery, CHPG is elevating its surgical prowess. Artificial intelligence tools in MRI and anatomo-pathology aim to enhance diagnosis accuracy.
A growing number of coordinated patient pathways, over 15 to date, bring tests and consultations into consolidated visits. A digital portal will facilitate seamless data sharing with liberal health professionals.
Luxury Meets Healthcare
CHPG wishes to offer a premium experience tailored to patients’ comfort and dignity, without losing its public‑service ethos.
A “smart connected” assisted-living apartment will help patients with decreased autonomy. A live digital feedback system will gather real-time patient insights. Accessibility initiatives, spearheaded by Dr Valérie Bernard, include a dedicated reception line, custom pathways, and comprehensive staff training.
A concierge desk and individualized induction are part of a broader employer‑brand uplift, essential in a cross-border recruitment landscape.
A Green Hospital, Inside and Out
Echoing Monaco’s environmental ambitions, CHPG commits to becoming a model of sustainable healthcare. CHPG will publish annual CSR reports to track its progress . Nitrous oxide has already been phased out, and new recycling paths saved an estimated 12 tons CO₂ in 2024.
Beyond operational efficiency, the new HQE-certified hospital, phased to open in 2026, will incorporate natural ventilation, solar, and potentially thalassothermal systems.
Infrastructure: Rebuilding on Tradition
The CHPG rebuild continues through 2032 while phase 1 is expected to complete by 2026. The new facility spans 107,000 m², with 85 % single rooms, modern operating theaters, and eco-friendly construction materials. It is built on the same footprint to ensure continuous care throughout reconstruction.
In terms of financing, budget oversight remains critical, as the cost, initially €795 M–€867 M, could rise over the €1 billion mark. These developments must be part of a reasoned strategy that reconciles innovation and budgetary prudence is emphasized by Christophe Robino, Minister for Health and Social Affairs.
A Shared Endeavour
This is not just a hospital project, it’s a community project. Over 100 voices, medical staff, administrators and patients, have shaped the plan. Strategic partnerships include the Ministry of Health, digital service providers, and local authorities.
The CHPG workforce, 2,900 strong, alongside 90,000 annual patients, anchors Monaco’s healthcare ecosystem.
As Medical Committee head Dr Liberatore put it, “Living excellence, nourished by innovation,” perfectly sums up CHPG’s future vision. Ambition, indeed: this project weaves sophistication, social commitment, and sustainability into every strand of modern healthcare, redefining what a 21st-century public hospital can be.
