A fine performance with goals from Baldé and Lemar set up AS Monaco for a 2-0 win at Bordeaux.

For this trip to south-west France, Leonardo Jardin opted to keep faith with the same back line that shut out Caen last weekend (2-0). Baldé started up front, with Moutinho providing support behind him. The Monegasques came out of the blocks fast, as Fabinho beat his man and drove forward down the left before swapping passes with Jorge in the box, but the Brazilian’s stinging effort was saved by Costil. Moments later, Lemar and Tielemans both tried their luck from range, without success.

With 11 minutes on the clock, it was Subasic’s turn to be called into action as the Girondins launched a lightning counter-attack. The ball found its way to De Préville on the edge of the area and his curled shot was on target, but the Monaco ‘keeper dived full-length to hold the ball at the second attempt, a majestic save! Glik also directed a powerful header on goal around the half-hour mark, that was fielded by the impressive Costil. The sides went in at the break with the scoreline goalless.

The visitors started the second half brightly and were rewarded in the 57th minute, as Jorge collected the ball on the left and accelerated forward. His cross found Moutinho, who headed down for Baldé to side-foot past Costil and put AS Monaco in front.

The goal emboldened the Red & Whites, who quickly went back on the attack. Glik pumped a long ball towards Lemar, and the France midfielder brought it down perfectly and eluded Sabaly, Vada and Lewcsuk before slotting past Costil (64’). It was a quite superb way to open his account for the season, and gave AS Monaco the breathing space of a two-goal lead.

Jemerson was the late hero for his side, clearing the ball off the line twice. Over the 90 minutes, the Monegasques outplayed their opponents with application, cohesion and clinical finishing to secure a two-goal victory, their second in succession. The result sees them consolidate second place in the table on 25 points. Their next match is Wednesday’s crucial trip to Besiktas, as the Red & Whites look to keep their Champions League campaign alive. Daghe Munegu!
