Exceptional concert of Denis Matsuev in Monaco: piano magician with “Russian soul”

Berin Iglesias Art and the Opera Garnier Monte-Carlo proudly present an amazing concert of Denis Matsuev at the occasion of the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival.

The Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival is preparing to receive a veritable piano star within the Opera de Monte-Carlo. A worthy successor to Emil Gilels and educated in the great schools of Russia, Denis Matsuev is a classical piano virtuoso. Yes, you read that right: classical piano. After winning a first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition at 23, the Colossus of Irkutsk won over the world with his athletic performances of Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich. With an imperial, naturally confounding presence, he gave 150 concerts per year in the most prestigious venues, under the direction of the greatest conductors.

Mr. Matsuev is a frequent guest of world famous music festivals such as Verbier Festival and Lucerne Music Festival in Switzerland, BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival in Great Britain, Les Chorégies d’Orange and Festival de la Rogue d’Anthéron in France or Stars of the White Nights Festival in Russia. For 11 consecutive years Denis Matsuev has his original series at The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory “Denis Matsuev invites…”. Many famous orchestras, prominent conductors, outstanding soloists have taken part in it. Matsuev performs with the world’s best known orchestras, such as the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic or Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He is continually re-engaged with legendary Russian orchestras such as the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Mariinsky Orchestra and the Russian National Orchestra.

This time in Monaco Denis Matsuev will be accompanied by Alexander Zinger on drums, Andrey Ivanov on double bass, Aidar Gaynullin on accordion and Sofia Turina on saxophone. When Matsuev is not playing piano, he manages seven festivals (including one in Annecy, France) and a foundation that supports and brings young musicians to the fore.

Denis Matsuev is accustomed to encores, sometimes surprising his music-loving audiences with jazz improvisations to which only he holds the secret: “Jazz is my second passion”, he explains. It’s what drove the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival to call him in for an exceptional concert, with a top-secret repertoire, on the Opéra de Monte-Carlo’s stage on November 18.
