Mortality Rates are Up: Monegasque Demographics Study by IMSEE

A study by the Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE) that covers exclusively Monegasque nationals for the year 2025 was recently published with a few surprising results. Covering demographics from births, deaths, marriages and more, the study shows a decrease in Monegasque births, an increase in deaths, and a life expectancy that reached an all-time high for the year 2025. The study compares the past year tohistorical data used back as far as 1950.

Population: Women are the Majority

As of 31 December 2025, the Principalitys population is 9,959 Monegasques. The population has increased by 79 people, or 0.8%, over the past year, a rise similar to the average seen over the last ten years. Women remain in the majority (54.1%) with a ratio of 84.8 men per 100 women.

Impact of New Laws

The small size of the Monegasque population means that some indicators vary widely from one year to the next. Since 1951, three legislative changes have had a significant impact on the number of Monegasques: 1952, 1992 and 2011. Apart from these years, the population has grown steadily.

The years following a change in the law are therefore not representative of a trend and should be interpreted with caution. It should be noted that the latest law amending the acquisition of nationality by marriage came into force on 1 July 2022 and that its effects will be visible from 2032, says the IMSEE. (The Law No. 1.512 on the acquisition of nationality by marriage extended the duration of marriage from ten to twenty years.)

Average age is 45

The age pyramid of Monegasques has an unusual structure, mainly due to a significant number of individuals who join the population after the age of 40. The Monegasque population is 45.3 years old on average, and half of the population is over 47 years old. The average age is significantly higher for women than for men. More than a quarter of Monegasques are under 25, and over 15% are aged 75 or over.

Almost all Monegasques live in the Principality

About 94% of Monegasques live in the Principality and 4.9% in France. These figures have changed very little since the data first became available (in 2012). Over the past ten years, the proportion of Monegasques reporting that they live outside the Principality has increased by just 0.4 percent.

Nine out of ten Monegasques were born in Monaco or France

Nearly 9,000 Monegasques were born in Monaco (6,260) or France (2,648), which is around nine out of ten. 222 were born in Italy.

Half of Monegasque adults are married

Nearly 80% of Monegasques are aged 18 and over. Out of these, almost half are married and a quarter are single. Just under a quarter of Monegasques aged 50 to 59 are divorced. The proportion of single people decreases with age but stabilizes at around 5% from the age of 60 onwards. The proportion of widowed individuals rises from 4.1% among those aged 60 to 69 to 55.9% among those aged 90 and over.

Birth rate continues to drop

84 Monegasque births took place in 2025 (45 boys and 39 girls), down from 2024 (102). The birth rate is 8.4 , below the ten-year average (11.5 ).

Since the early 2000s, women have been, on average, having children later in life. For example, 14.1% of women aged 25 to 29 gave birth to a Monegasque child in 201315 and 8.2% in 202325. For women aged 30 and over, the trend is reversed: fertility rates for the periods 201315 and 202325 are consistently higher than those for 200002.

Mortality rate is above its ten-year average

In 2025, 93 Monegasques died (37 men and 56 women), compared to 86 the previous year. The mortality rate is 9.3, above the average observed over the last five years (9.0 ). Due to the size of the Monegasque population, the calculation of life expectancy is grouped by 3-year periods.

Life expectancy reaches all-time high

Life expectancy at birth for Monegasques reached an all-time high in 202325: 88.5 years old for the population as a whole. It rose by 0.4 years compared with 202224, driven by a marked increase among men (+1.1 years), while falling slightly forwomen (-0.3 years). Since 200002, life expectancy has increased by 8.0 years for men and by 5.0 years for women.

The gap between the two sexes is narrowing: 4.2 years longer for women in 202325 compared to 7.4 years in 200009. The average life expectancy has risen steadily from 67.8 years in the early 1950s to 84.5 years in the period 202025.
