During Pink October, a month dedicated to the awareness and prevention of breast cancer, an awareness campaign has been launched across the Principality, with the participation of the Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG), the Grimaldi Forum and the Prince’s Government.
“Breast cancer screening aims to reduce the number of deaths caused by this disease by detecting it as early as possible. Early detection allows for faster treatment, improves prognosis and makes it possible to use less aggressive therapies,” stated the Prince’s Government.
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. One in eight women will face breast cancer during their lifetime.
At the Princess Grace Hospital Centre, patients have access to state-of-the-art equipment and the medical expertise of a first-class screening centre. Thanks to improved screening (60% of breast cancers are now detected at an early stage) and the development of increasingly effective therapies, 87% of patients are still alive and enter remission five years after diagnosis.
Self-examination advice with the help of “Rosie”
An awareness-raising event was organized for the Grimaldi Forum teams in collaboration with the Princess Grace Hospital Centre (CHPG) at the beginning of October.
The workshop, called Pal’Patrouille, offered a fun and educational approach to breast self-examination, an essential step for early detection of potential abnormalities. Thanks to “Rosie”, a specially designed learning bust, participants were able to practice the technique and ask questions to the healthcare professionals present.
“It was a useful and friendly opportunity, which served as a reminder of the importance of regularly consulting their gynaecologist and having a follow-up mammogram,” said the Grimaldi Forum in a recent press release.
More events are being organized throughout the month, including an event on 15, 22 and 29 October at the CHPG.
If ever in doubt, the CHPG Breast Day Centre can perform all the necessary diagnostic tests in one place, in a single day, with same-day results. (Screening relies primarily on imaging tests like mammograms and ultrasounds. An MRI is sometimes recommended as an additional test in certain cases.)
“October is breast cancer awareness month: do not wait, get screened!” said the Prince’s Government.
