Princely digest: Prince Albert II Foundation’s anniversary and First French Charity Mile
It’s been an exciting and busy week for the Princely couple. Albert and Charlene of Monaco spent a lot of time apart in order to fulfill their many commitments.
Prince Albert II Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of his Foundation in Paris
The tenth anniversary of the French section of his foundation, dedicated to the protection of the planet, was celebrated on Wednesday evening in Salle Gaveau in Paris.
On stage at one of the most beautiful concert halls in Paris, the historic Salle Gaveau, questions concerning the planet, nature, the oceans, sustainable development and conservation of biodiversity were raised. The event, presented by Stéphane Bern, took place in front of a crowd of personalities from the worlds of business, politics and entertainment. The Salle Gaveau venue was chosen because its owners are two Monegasque personalities: Jean-Marie and Chantal Fournier, organizers of the Monaco Masters, a high-level competition for violin, voice and piano.
€37.3M for 370 projects…
Prince Albert II and his foundation have gained the admiration of the Parisian people. Prince Albert II is continuing the legacy began by Prince Albert l, the “prince scientist” who in his days was an intellectual and benefactor for the protection of the oceans.
In ten years, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has supported 370 projects worldwide, for a total of 37.3 million euros. It has seen the sovereign donning boots, wearing helmets, wearing protective clothing to inaugurate important projects in every corner of the planet. Planned projects for 2017 include: developing Mediterranean marine protected areas, creating a network of actors involved in combating plastic pollution in the oceans and working on linking aquaculture and Marine protected areas.
In a concert hall, music softened the disturbing discussions about the planet’s suffering. Performing that night were Russian pianist Miroslav Kultychev, Masters of Monaco winner, renowned brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, violinist and cellist, pianist Hélène Mercier, and one of the most famous Monegasque residents, baritone Ruggero Raimondi. The charity evening raised 200,000 euros. In the heart of Paris, Prince Albert united the generosity of all who attended, for the benefit of the planet.
‘Princess Charlene of Monaco Prize’ awarded in French first-ever Charity Mile
What a suspenseful event under the radiant sun of the Cote d’Azur! Before the first ‘Princess Charlene of Monaco Prize’ could be awarded, judges had look closely to decide a winner between the two horses which crossed the finish-line first at the Cagnes-sur-Mer racecourse. In the end, Miracle des Aigles, with jockey Renan Thomas, was declared the winner of the first French Charity Mile. An idea imported from South Africa to Europe by Princess Charlene’s father. This ‘Tiercé, Quarté, Quinté+’, which is an official gallop race, donated money to 18 charities associated with the 18 horses registered in the race.
Big smiles
After a fast-paced race marked by a moment of uncertainty about the winner, Charlene was able to offer a €10,000 grand prize to Action Innocence of Monaco. Handi-mobile education received 6,000 euros and the Monegasque Red Cross 4,000 euros. The other associations won 2,000 euros each. Besides the charity aspect, this event also wanted to attract “the eyes of the racing world,” as François Forcioli-Conti, president of the Racecourse Society of Azur put it.
“For once, France is a forerunner. A fine initiative and a model to reproduce,” said Edouard de Rotschild, president of France Gallop.
It seems that the Charity Mile, with its Princess Charlene Prize, will become part of the horse race tradition of the Cagnes-sur-Mer track.
“As kind as Albert”
Princess Charlene’s presence did not go unnoticed yesterday at the racecourse. The public, with mobile phones in hand, was quick to capture the moments when the princess stood in front of the stands.
Princess Charlene first greeted the sponsors of the Charity Mile, then the representatives of the associations. Finally, at the end of the race, she awarded the prize trophy, which bears her name, a beautiful glass cup from Biot, to the owner of the horse Miracle des Aigles; and a trophy to the winning jockey, Renan Thomas.
“She seems as kind as her husband, Albert, whom we had seen a few years ago and who seemed open,” said Bernadette and Suzanne, two friends living in Eastern France, on vacation in the Cote d’Azur. “We’re happy to be here. Plus, the Princess is smiling.”
Winner of the Charity Mile fights online dangers
“It’s amazing. We’re thrilled and delighted to receive such a cheque. We are an association that helps protect children and adolescents against dangers faced on the internet,” said Louisette Levy Soussan Azzoglio, president of Action Innocence and Frédérique de Chambure, general secretary. “Our association survives on donations alone, so this day is wonderful for us. The setting is beautiful, Princess Charlene was there and gave us the cheque. Yes, it’s a great day for our association.”

The elegant Princess glamorously represented her foundation Friday night.
AMREF Flying Doctors, the first public health NGO in Africa, is committed to continuously improving the health of African communities. More than 9 million people are helped every year.
Charlene de Monaco has provided unfailing support to the AMREF Flying Doctors. Surrounded by the head of the NGO, Githinji Gitahi, Gilles Tonelli (Government Counsellor for External Relations since 2015), Monegasque diver Pierre Frolla and his wife Mara, the charming Italian actress Caterina Murino (who played a James Bond girl in Casino Royale) and Italian actor Remo Girone.
Alain Pastor is Knighted in the presence of Prince Albert II, Senator Hélène Conway Mouret and the ambassador of France
In the presence of the sovereign and in front of a crowd of friends and personalities, Alain Pastor received the Knight of Arts and Letters of the French State insignia, presented by Marine de Carne-Trécesson.
“In an increasingly cosmopolitan Principality, you have been keen to continue teaching the mission of the French Alliance of Monaco, while giving it a new cultural influence. At the same time, you have enriched the literary capital of our beautiful French language with your passion for writing,” emphasized the French ambassador in Monaco while awarding Alain Pastor, theatre author.

The recipient has also been president of the French Alliance of Monaco since 2002, has trained more than a thousand students in the Principality over the last ten years and has developed training courses to help Iraqi refugees with the French language.
Alain Pastor has also been writing for twenty years. Creating several plays, including “A Life of Saint Martin” (Une vie de Saint Martin) presented onstage about forty times since its publication in 2011. “It is always difficult to give reasons for writing. They are often intimate, and, basically, it could be said that the work carries within itself the elements an answer,” said the recipient on the mic while receiving the insignia. Citing Saint John Perse, he said: “I write to live better.”

“Environmental and climatic changes: impacts on Human Health”
The Award will honor an investigator under fifty years old who has made outstanding contributions to the field. The honoree will receive a 40,000 Euros award for his team. Candidates from all relevant disciplines (ecological, biomedical, and social sciences) are invited to submit their applications, which will be evaluated by a Jury of renowned scientific experts.
The dossier should include:
- a one-page letter written by the nominee describing the importance of his/her contribution to the field of “Environmental and climatic changesand their impacts on Human Health”;
- a curriculum vitae;
- a list of scientific publications and/or books;
- a one-page outline of her/his plans for future research;
- two letters of support.

Charlotte Casiraghi arrives at Milan Fashion Week
The daughter of Princess Caroline and granddaughter of Grace Kelly attended the Gucci show during Milan Fashion Week on Thursday — and looked every inch the street style star.
The royal, 30 y.o., wore a pair of green suede wide-leg pants, white tee, and gold sequin bomber jacket for the occasion. She also sported a pair of the brand’s signature loafer fringed pumps in gold and silver, as well as a white Gucci bag.
Inside, she took her place in the front row (naturally), sitting next to fellow fashionista Alexa Chung and Gucci’s CEO, Marco Bizzarri.
Casiraghi has quite a history with the brand: She has modeled for them in three separate campaigns for their Forever Now fragrance. The first debuted in 2012. Since then, she has often been seen wearing Gucci to several high-profile events, including last year’s Met Gala.
