As part of celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the Principality’s accession to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation organised a high-level colloquium in Monaco on Monday 25 June 2018.
In her opening speech, H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, who is President of AMADE Mondiale, emphasised that “Together, we must unite our efforts to eradicate the phenomenon of violence, including by adopting and enforcing laws which protect children. But we must also combat violence by changing the attitudes and mind-sets which perpetuate it, because any level of tolerance in this area is unacceptable. This is the commitment that H.S.H. Prince Albert II, my brother, has shown over a number of years now, making the promotion and protection of children’s rights one of his political priorities.”
Following a speech by Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children, an expert panel met to discuss the topic of “Violence against children in the context of the family and school.”
The discussions were moderated by Jean-Charles Sacotte, President of the Institut du Droit Economique de la Mer (Institute of Economic Law of the Sea) and a member of the Council of State.
Among the speakers were expert members of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and the Council of Europe, UNICEF’s Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, human rights advocates and representatives of non-governmental organisations.
The colloquium’s concluding remarks were presented by Anne Eastwood, High Commissioner for the Protection of Rights, Liberties and for Mediation, in the presence of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover.
