Signature of a Declaration of Cooperation between Monaco and Sweden

On Friday 13 October 2017, a day of discussion and dialogue was held at the Yacht Club of Monaco as a follow-up to the United Nations Oceans Conference held in New York last June.  The event “Connecting and Protecting Our Seas:  Initiatives in the Baltic and the Mediterranean” was held in the presence of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, H.R.H. Prince Carl Philip of Sweden and representatives of Sweden in France and Monaco.

As part of this event, which was organised by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, a Declaration of Cooperation was signed by Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, and her Swedish counterpart, Karolina Skog.

This agreement confirms the willingness of both States to broaden their commitment to the oceans, encourage the sharing of experience on existing solutions and develop practical initiatives.  It also calls for better sharing of information and know-how in order to work for the preservation of the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas and aims to encourage players from academia, businesses and civil society to increase dialogue and deepen their cooperation.

At the end of this day event, at which, in particular, discussions were held on pollution, overfishing and the effects of climate change, which affect all the seas on our planet to varying degrees, Marie‑Pierre Gramaglia concluded that, “This meeting has once again made it possible to focus attention on the oceans and point out what affects them, paying particular attention to the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, which border our respective countries.  It was also an opportunity, which I welcome, to strengthen links between the Principality of Monaco and the Kingdom of Sweden and reiterate our shared commitment to the implementation of the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goals to conserve the oceans, seas and marine resources and exploit them in a sustainable manner.”

As a reminder, the Principality of Monaco and the Kingdom of Sweden both have a strong commitment to supporting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal No. 14 (SDG 14), which features on the 2030 United Nations agenda.

Also as a reminder, more than 90% of greenhouse gas emissions inflicted by mankind on the planet since the 1950s have been absorbed by the oceans.
