World Rowing Coastal Championships 2016 in Monaco: results

Last Saturday was a day for a great battle in the finals at the 2016 World Rowing Coastal Championships in Monaco. The sea was calm and flat for the races that would show great battle and grit amongst the finalists. The B-finals were raced over the same 4km course as the heats. The six A-finals were raced over a 6km course that added two more important turns.

The Spaniards outperformed everyone, and took home the overall trophy with a total of 58 points, Italy took second place and France third.

Women’s Solo (CW1x) – Final

Ireland’s Monica Dukarska (IRL01) made a big impression taking a nearly 40 second lead over her competitors. Dukarska crossed the line to claim the World Championship title.

Men’s Double Sculls (CM2x) – Final

It was an incredible race with a pack of 21 boats, with home favourites and 2015 World Champions MON01 in the thick of it. Coming around the final buoy, ESP02 grabbed the best course, followed by ITA02 and MON01. The position remained the same across the line.

Women’s Coxed Quadruple Sculls (CW4x+) – Final

FRA09 and RUS01 were favourites for the day’s Final. No real surprises for the gold and silver, however, a tough battle was had for bronze, between ESP02 and GER02 who were going stroke for stroke. Charging for the line, FRA09 took gold, RUS01 silver and ESP02 held on to bronze.

Men’s Solo (CM1x) – Final

This one kept everyone on the edges of their seats. ESP03 crashed right into the buoy bringing his boat to a stop. TUN01, unfortunately broke his oar. This completely shifted the leading trio as ESP01 strode out ahead. Coming out of the crash it was PER01 and SWE01 who got away cleanly. ESP01 managed to hold the lead, while PER01 and SWE01 fought it out until PER01 solidified his silver medal, leaving the bronze for SWE01.

Women’s Double Sculls (CW2x) – Final

An unstoppable Italian team was at the start of the Eighteen boat line-up in the women’s double, all with the goal of crossing the line first. They had a fantastic start and took a solid lead that they would keep till the end. The two-time World Champions FRA01 fought for silver alongside TUN01 and DEN01. A big pleasant surprise from the outside Tunisian team as this was their first participation at a World Rowing Coastal Championships.

Men’s Coxed Quadruple Sculls (CM4x+) – Final

The final race of the day was going to be an intense race. The crews’ focus was to avoid costly penalties in crashes. ITA01 made the best of it off the line, being hotly pursued by CZE01, ITA02 and MON01. To the disappointment of the home crowd, MON01 finished outside the medals in fourth.
