AS Monaco claimed a 2-1 win at thanks to goals from Radamel Falcao and Kylian Mbappé to go back to the top of Ligue 1.
Mission accomplished. In a tough-looking fixture, against opponents and at a stadium where they have struggled in recent times, AS Monaco secured three points with a 2-1 win to go straight back to the top of the table, with a game in hand.
This was a deserved win for Leonardo Jardim’s side, who had the better chances. In the first half, Mbappé and Falcao were thwarted by the in-form Lopes (13 mins, 24 mins), but El Tigre demonstrated his usual sharpness in front of goal to nod home the opener, after Glik had set him up with a fine header from Lemar’s corner (36 mins). Mbappé was as dangerous as ever on the counter and made it two just before the break, slotting past Lopes after beating Diakhaby for pace (44 mins).
AS MONACO PROTECT THEIR LEAD
The two goal advantage proved vital, as Lyon came out for the second half with different ideas and upped the pressure, particularly from corners. Tousart headed in to reduce the deficit and give the home side hope (49 mins, 1-2). Glik and Bakayoko both produced superb headed clearances to ease the pressure on the Monegasques.
The Lyonnais storm abated for a while, but there was a frenetic end to the game as Falcao (71 mins) and then Germain with a wonderful header (82 mins) both came within a hair’s breadth of restoring AS Monaco’s two goal lead. But Tousart who caused a few jitters among the Monegasque contingent with the last effort of the night. Fortunately, his header only shaved Subasic’s post. The game ended in a victory for the visitors, their seventh successive win in Ligue 1. There are just five games remaining of the run-in.
