History was guaranteed before the first whistle. Victory was not.
A large and expectant crowd filled Stade Didier Deschamps as Monaco United and ASMFF met in the first official women’s football derby ever played between two Monaco-based clubs. The atmosphere carried all the tension of an established rivalry, even though this was where the rivalry began.
From the opening exchanges, neither side appeared willing to surrender the occasion. Challenges flew in, possession changed hands and chances arrived at both ends. Then ASMFF struck first.
Suddenly, Monaco United faced an uncomfortable possibility: the inaugural derby might belong to its neighbour.
Yet the early blow did not break Marco Simone’s team. Monaco United remained organised, gradually reclaimed possession and began pushing ASMFF backwards. With half-time approaching, captain Rachel Robert delivered the response her side desperately needed, scoring an exceptional equaliser to send the teams into the interval at 1–1.
“A derby is never easy,” Robert said. “We knew our opponents would come with a lot of determination. The start was difficult, and it took us some time to impose our rhythm.”
The balance began to shift after the restart. Monaco United moved the ball with greater fluency, found spaces in the ASMFF defence and created a succession of dangerous openings.
Shortly before the hour mark came the decisive breakthrough. Jade Prault burst into the penalty area and was brought down by the goalkeeper. Robert stepped forward with the pressure of the occasion on her shoulders, and calmly converted for her second goal of the match.
Monaco United led 2–1, but the derby was not yet secure. ASMFF pushed forward in search of an equaliser, forcing Simone’s players to defend with discipline as the tension rose inside the stadium.
Then one substitution changed everything.
Léa Rosenberger had been on the pitch for only a few minutes when an excellent Monaco United move opened the way to goal. With one of her first touches, she beat the goalkeeper and gave her team the precious two-goal cushion it needed.
Only then could Monaco United begin to believe that history was theirs.
“A derby is played with the heart, but it is also won with the head,” Simone said. “The players showed character and demonstrated that they were capable of responding collectively to an important challenge.”
The final whistle confirmed a 3–1 victory and made Monaco United the first winner of the Principality’s women’s football derby.
For a club in only the second season of its history, it was more than three championship points. It was a statement of ambition and a memorable demonstration that women’s football is establishing a genuine presence in Monaco.
Monaco United will next travel to face St Didier Pernoise. The championship continues, but one distinction can never be taken away: the first Monaco derby belongs to Monaco United.
