Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters – Day 4

Tuesday April 18

The 2013 and 2015 Monte Carlo winner Novak Djokovic opens his campaign on clay-courts against Gilles Simon, who he beat ten times on 11 in career. Nole got the last win at the 2016 Australian Open in fifth sets despite hitting 100 unforced errors, while Simon beat him only at the 2008 Marseille event. It will be a good test to understand at which level Djokovic is after a difficult start of the year, against a player who plays from the back of the court and never gives up. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga comes back to the ATP Tour after becoming father and will play his first match since Indian Wells. The French player will face the qualifier Adrian Mannarino, there is an only previous meeting between them, in 2014 Miami when Tsonga easily won in straights.

The last match of the day will be one of the most interesting ones: David Goffin, who broke into the top 10 for the first time in his career this year, faces a former top 10 player, Nicolas Almagro. The Belgian is favourite, but it won’t be easy for him if Almagro has a good day. Lucas Pouille opens the day against Ryan Harrison, while on Court des Princes Tommy Robredo, who beat Dimitrov last week in Marrakech, plays against Gilles Muller. Tommy Haas will play against Benoit Paire, while Borna Coric, who won the title in Marocco last week, will try to continue his win streak against Jeremy Chardy. There will be three Next Gen Players in action: the 18-year-old Casper Ruud, Karen Khachanov and Daniil Medvedev.
