Features of Monaco’s New Driving Licences and How to Apply

The Principality began rolling out a new driving licence earlier this month.

The Principality began rolling out a new driving licence earlier this month.

“More practical for everyday use, more secure, more durable, and compliant with international standards, this new model will gradually replace the current licence, which will remain valid for several years,” says the Princely Government in a recent press release.

Secure and Recyclable

Made of recyclable material, the new licence incorporates numerous advanced security features. On the back, a visual electronic certificate will allow for quick verification of its authenticity during checks.

Another new feature: the card will now need to be renewed every fifteen years (which is already the case for passports and national identity cards). The update will be only for the holder’s photograph; no new driving examination will be required. The price remains unchanged: €23 (in 2026), whether it’s a first-time issue or a renewal.

Online Application

To support this evolution, a new driver’s license renewal service is now available online, on the monguichet.mc platform. Accessible 24/7, this online service allows users to complete their applications remotely, “simply and securely, without needing to travel in most cases,” says the Princely Government.

Holders of drivers licences in the current format that have not yet expired do not need to take any urgent action.

The Vehicle Licensing Service now encourages users to take advantage of this new digital platform, developed to simplify administrative procedures and reduce processing times. The online service includes the electronic submission of identity photographs and signatures, which can be done directly from a touch screen, or via a QR Code.

Led by the Vehicle Licensing Service, in close collaboration with the Digital Services Department and the Information Systems Department, this project includes an overhaul of the Service’s information system, “which will pave the way for further digital developments.”
