Monaco Goes Crazy for Frankie: A Little Orange Nose with a Big Heart

For the 22nd edition of Monaco's much-loved Red Nose Day, the traditional red nose has undergone something of a personality transformation.

This autumn, the Principality is preparing to embrace a unique fashion accessory.

It’s small, bright orange, slightly crazy and costs just €3.

Meet Crazy Frankie.

For the 22nd edition of Monaco’s much-loved Red Nose Day, the traditional red nose has undergone something of a personality transformation. And while the new look may excite smiles, the mission behind it remains as serious and heartwarming as ever: bringing happiness, comfort and practical assistance to children facing some of life’s toughest challenges.

Under the High Patronage of Prince Albert II, the Monegasque charity Les Enfants de Frankie is launching its annual fundraising campaign, culminating on Sunday 6 December.

And this year, orange is the new red.

A Little Less Red, a Lot More Crazy

Forget the familiar red foam ball.

Thanks to a collaboration with official partner EFG Private Banking and Smiley World Limited, the international company behind the famous smiley-face brand, Frankie’s traditional nose has been reinvented.

The new Crazy Frankie is smaller, brighter and decidedly more mischievous.

Designed to be displayed on cars, backpacks, desks and other everyday objects, it transforms a modest €3 donation into a cheerful public declaration of support.

The idea is delightfully simple. Rather than asking people merely to make a donation, the charity invites them to become walking, or driving, advertisements for a good cause.

Imagine Monaco’s streets dotted with little orange faces.

There is, of course, much more to Les Enfants de Frankie than a colourful annual campaign.

Founded in November 1997 by Francien Giraudi, the association has spent almost three decades helping children who are ill, living with disabilities or facing serious social difficulties in Monaco and the neighbouring Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.

Its philosophy is that childhood should contain moments of happiness, discovery and excitement, even when circumstances make ordinary pleasures difficult to enjoy.

And the scale of its work is impressive.

According to the association, more than 160,000 children have benefited from activities and projects it has financed since its creation. It works with more than 215 organisations, including hospitals, medical and social-care establishments and child welfare services.

The practical results can be surprisingly moving.

Over the years, the association has helped finance equine therapy for children with intellectual disabilities, specialist neonatal transport equipment and even thousands of cheerful, child-friendly dressings for young patients at the Princess Grace Hospital.

There is also an international dimension to this distinctly Monegasque success story. Since 2008, Les Enfants de Frankie has held special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

And since November 2023, Prince Albert II has served as the association’s Honorary President.

Three Euros That Can Make a Difference

Crazy Frankie will be appearing across the Principality as the campaign gathers momentum.

The new orange noses will be available through participating outlets, including Carrefour Monaco, selected post offices and pharmacies.

Volunteers will also take the campaign directly to the public with a series of temporary sales stands at the Princess Grace Hospital, Fontvieille Shopping Centre and Monaco Railway Station.

The message is uncomplicated: for the price of a modest coffee, almost anyone can make a contribution.

And when hundreds or thousands of people participate, those small gestures can help finance something much more substantial.

Christmas Comes Early for Frankie

The fundraising campaign reaches its climax on Sunday 6 December, the official Journée Monégasque des Nez Rouges.

But the celebrations begin a day earlier.

On Saturday 5 December, the Sporting Monte-Carlo will host Noël de Frankie, the association’s traditional invitation-only Christmas celebration for children.

The annual event brings together entertainment, presents, festive treats and, naturally, Frankie the clown himself.

Monaco knows how to stage spectacular events. But sometimes its most meaningful celebrations involve no red carpet, no glittering trophies and no celebrity guest list.

Just a small orange nose, a generous public and a few more smiles where they are needed most.

Crazy Frankie may look a little ridiculous.

But there is nothing ridiculous about the difference he always manages to make.
