Paris Agreements: Prince Albert II commits to the United Nations

The sovereign filed the instrument of ratification of the Paris Agreements, which were adopted after the COP21 convention, during his visit to New York last week at the offices of the United Nations. Monaco is now in.

Prince Albert II of Monaco was welcomed to the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on the 38th floor of the building, where the decision makers have their seats (Ban Ki-Moon’s (Secretary-General of the United Nations) office too). The 38th floor is where all the decisions are made concerning international relations. Isabelle Picco is the Monegasque ambassador to the United Nations. Just prior to heading to the 38th floor, Prince Albert II filed the Paris Agreements, which were adopted after the Cop21, in December 2015.

After going through all the security checks (sniffer dogs etc) en-route to the 38th floor, and all the protocol involved with going to a diplomatic press conference, The Prince finally met with the heads of the United Nations to discuss the bilateral agreements, in a room with a magnificent view over Manhattan. Meeting with the Secretary General who’s second and final term is about to end on the 31st December 2016, allowed for a successful exchange in the discussions of topics such as Climate change, as well as discussing certain files in preparation of COP22, which will be held in Marrakesh from the 7th November 2016.

The Prince mentioned to the journalists how proud and delighted he was, to have deposited the agreement to be ratified. He admitted that there was still a lot of work to be done. The difficulty in the agreements is being able to keep up with all the agreed commitments mentioned. This has to be monitored in the most efficient manner if it is to work. Monaco was one of the first of the 100 members to file the instrument of ratification, before the deadline which is on the 4th of November.
