10 years of the Monaco Humanitarian Collective – Very Positive Results
On Monday 17 September, the Monaco Humanitarian Collective celebrated its 10th anniversary in the presence of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, the Minister of State and high-ranking dignitaries. The very positive results were presented to the Collective’s many volunteers and donors – 384 children, mainly from Africa, were operated on in Monaco for heart problems, as well as some children with orthopaedic diseases that are not treated in their country of origin.
During the ceremony, the many accounts of children who had undergone surgery and their parents, host families and doctors were an illustration of the remarkable work undertaken in Monaco and in partner countries to restore hope and a new life to these 384 children.
With regard to future prospects, the Collective affirmed its willingness to help partner countries strengthen their medical care capacity, with, for example, the creation of the first cardiac catheterisation unit in Mali, a project supported by the NGO “Share,” with the support of the Prince’s Government. Prince Albert commemorates Battles of Normandy
HSH Prince Albert II visited several places in Normandy to commemorate one of the largest battles of the 20th century, the Normandy landings. Passionate about history, the Sovereign Prince, accompanied by Michael Wittstock, his father-in-law and American friends, began his visit at the Caen Memorial. The unique museum is dedicated to the Second World War and the landing of the Allies on 6 June 1944, which was followed by the Battle of Normandy and is managed by Stéphane Grimaldi.
The Sovereign Prince visited the American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer, the resting place of 10,000 American soldiers who fell during the Battle of Normandy, a battle which lasted 100 days and ended with the taking of Le Havre on 12 September 1944. It overlooks the infamous Omaha Beach, where thousands of GIs fell to German gunfire on D-Day. The visit ended in the small town of Arromanches, which was transformed into a temporary harbour on 12 June 1944, where thousands of tons of equipment, vehicles and food arrived daily for more than three months for 2.5 million men.
