Prince Albert II attends ‘Children United for the Ocean’ Conference
The Sovereign honoured the commitment of young scientists during the “Children United for the Ocean Conference,” where CM2 students from the Saint-Charles School presented their research on Monaco’s Marine Educational Area, on June 24 at the Hôtel Méridien.
Trained in rigorous research protocols by the Monegasque Association for the Protection of Nature (AMPN), the students conducted their own field investigations on the Marine Educational Area located between the Rainier III dike of Port Hercule and the entrance to the port of Fontvieille.
The young scientists presented their projects, which included a fish census, use of BRUVS technology (baited underwater cameras), environmental DNA analysis, the study of the food chain and artificial reefs. They then recommended concrete actions like: increased surveillance, public awareness, reducing the use of plastic, promoting recycling, and adopting environmentally responsible behaviour at sea.
The AMPN initiative was created in response to Prince Rainier III’s wish to see Monaco contribute significantly to the protection of the Mediterranean and is supported by the Prince Albert II Foundation and the Prince’s Government.
