A suspect has been arrested and remanded in custody following the theft of jewellery worth an estimated more than €1 million from an elderly Monegasque resident, according to a statement released by Monaco’s Office of the Prosecutor General (Parquet Général).
The theft took place on 14 July, when a man allegedly posing as a police officer succeeded in stealing the jewellery from the victim. The official statement does not provide further details of how the fraud was carried out, focusing instead on the subsequent investigation.
Monaco authorities said the rapid intervention of the Sûreté Publique, working in close coordination with French police under the authority of several French public prosecutors, enabled investigators to quickly identify a suspect and locate his residence in France.
A search of the property was carried out on 17 July, during which investigators recovered numerous other items of jewellery as well as a substantial amount of cash. The Prosecutor General’s statement does not specify whether the jewellery stolen in Monaco was among the items recovered.
The suspect was remanded in custody on 19 July after being formally charged by a French investigating judge with organised fraud (escroquerie en bande organisée). The investigation remains ongoing under the authority of the French judicial authorities.
The case highlights the close operational cooperation between Monaco and France in cross-border criminal investigations, particularly where suspects or evidence are believed to be located outside the Principality. Authorities have not released further information about the suspect or indicated whether additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
