Rotary Club of Monaco: 80 years of solidarity

Some members came all the way from Parma to attend the event! On Tuesday evening, 260 people, most of them Rotarians and their spouses, gathered with Prince Albert II, honorary president of the Rotary Club of Monaco, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Monegasque club. Although the club is already quite old, it has enough experience to know how to stay eternally youthful: its president changes every year. Until June, Roland Marquet will lead projects focusing on health, professional action, education and youth. “How sweet it is to think that one can go around the globe, and meet people who share the Rotary ideal: lending their service to humanity.”

Pelagos Agreement

On 3rd April 2017 the Minister of State’s Residence hosted the signing ceremony for the Headquarters Agreement between the Government of Monaco, France, Italy and the permanent Secretariat of the Pelagos agreement.

Against the backdrop of events unfolding during Monaco Ocean Week, the signing took place in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and the French and Italian Ministers of the Environment, Mrs. Ségolène Royal and Mr. Gian Luca Galletti. The signing of the Headquarters Agreement will provide for the recognition of the legal status of the Pelagos Permanent Secretariat in the Principality. This is a key milestone in regard to the involvement of the member states in order to strengthen this sanctuary for marine mammals.

Signed by France, Italy and Monaco in Rome on 25th November 1999, the Pelagos Agreement concerns the creation of a sanctuary to protect marine mammals and their habitat from all types of human induced threats. The sanctuary is a pilot area of the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area.

Pelagos is the only international marine protected area dedicated to the protection of marine mammals in the Mediterranean. This maritime area covering 87,500 km² displays a wealth of biological riches and is home to many cetacean species.

Did you know?

The Pelagos sanctuary, which protects marine mammals and stretches between France, Monaco and Italy (and for which an agreement was signed on Monday with Ségolène Royal) was born through Rotary!

“It was thanks to the association between the three Rotary Clubs of Monaco, Saint Tropez and Milan Porta Vercellina that the idea was able to materialize enough to reach an agreement signed in 1999,” explains the Rotarians. Their actions are often discreet and unrecognized but they aren’t negligible. From next July, they will be presided over by Léonard Jacquot, who will succeed Roland Marquet. “It is indeed thanks to Patrick Weil, former president of the club, and Rotarian for more than thirty years, that the idea of a marine sanctuary was initiated.”

The sanctuary’s files were passed on from one generation to the next. Léonard Jacquot will take over for a year. “I was sponsored by a citizen of the country who put me in touch with the club only four years ago. I experienced the different Rotary activities. ‘Serve’ is a motto in which I find myself. My will is to perpetuate the actions of the Club.”
