Ligue 1: brilliant start for AS Monaco with clear victory against Dijon 4-1

With a magnificent hat trick against Dijon, the Colombian forward helped carry Monaco to a clear 4-1 victory away at Dijon.

Starting XI: Subasic – Sidibé, Jemerson, Glik, Jorge – Lopes, Moutinho, Fabinho, Lemar – Falcao, Diakhaby.

For the second match of the championship, Leonardo Jardim decided to stick with the team which beat Toulouse last weekend (3-2). The only difference was Diakhaby, making his first appearance for his new club as a direct replacement for Mbappé. From the outset, the Monegasque team established their dominance and opened the scoring in the second minute. Lemar’s corner found Glik’s head. Glik redirected it to Falcao at the far post and the Colombian forward slid it past Reynet to the back of the net. 1-0 to the Red and Whites.

FALCAO SEES DOUBLE…

Possession, opportunities, shots… everything went swimmingly for Monaco during the first half, and the team doubled their tally in the 25th minute as Jemerson caught Moutinho’s corner with an amazing bicycle kick right in Dijon’s area – fantastic! It was the Brazilian defender’s third goal in the last three matches (Rennes, Toulouse and Dijon). Ten minutes later, Diakhaby inherited a great ball straight down the middle and shepherded it skilfully before finding Falcao on his left at the edge of the box. Demonstrating good ball control, Falcao curled it into the top left-hand corner of the net, the ball glancing off Yambéré on the way, taking the score to 3-0 to AS Monaco! The Colombian forward’s third goal of the season came just a few minutes before Said pulled one back for Dijon a couple of minutes before half time.

…THEN TRIPLE !

Although Dijon were more enterprising as the second half got under way, with Sliti and Kwon particularly notable, it was Leonardo Jardim’s men who had the golden touch this evening. And number 9 shone especially bright. Another corner from Lemar gave El Tigre the opportunity to secure his second hat trick for Monaco (the previous one came during the December 2016 match against Bordeaux) as he headed the ball in from the far post in the 51st minute.

RECORD WINNING STREAK EQUALLED

This well-deserved four-goal victory in Dijon marks AS Monaco’s 14th consecutive win, equalling Bordeaux’s all-time record in the top league, achieved between March and August 2009 (14 wins in a row). Next Friday’s fixture at Metz could give Monaco a chance to make a little bit of history. Daghe Munegu!
