They needed to overturn a two goal deficit, and did so in style. Especially in the first half, during which City were taken apart by a fired up Monegasque side. Inside the 7th minute, Silva set up Mbappé to open the scoring after good work from Mendy down the left. The goal set Leonardo Jardim’s men on their way perfectly, and they continued to press the visitors. Mbappé had the ball in the net again with a quarter of an hour gone, but the goal was correctly chalked off for offside.

AN OUTSTANDING FIRST HALF

In the 29th minute, AS Monaco’s dominance was rewarded once again after a wonderful move started by Lemar, with Mendy playing Fabinho in perfectly in front of the English side’s goal. The Brazilian side-footed home to put the Red & Whites two goals up. Unable to cope, City were all at sea and failed to register a shot on goal in the first forty-five minutes. After the break, however, they came out with more intent. Forced on to the back foot by the Mancunians, Leonardo Jardim’s men denied the visitors several times, with Raggi tackling Stering superbly (57 mins) and Agüero firing over from Sané’s cross (62 mins). The Citizens’ first shot had taken a while to come, but others followed soon after, and Subasic made saves from Agüero (65 mins, 69 mins) and Sané (67e).

”BAKA” SENDS AS MONACO INTO THE QUARTER-FINALS!

The Croatian international denied Sterling again in the 71st minute, but Sané had followed up and swept into an empty net to pull one back for City. The English delegation were exultant, as their side were suddenly back in pole position against a Monegasque outfit who looked out of solutions. But one thing the home side did not lack was sheer willpower! Bakayoko showed great determination to get his head on Lemar’s 76th minute free-kick and power the ball past a beaten Caballero. The stadium was rocking and the atmosphere incredible as AS Monaco snatched back the advantage! And the Red & Whites protected their lead to the end to ensure they will be in the pot for next Friday’s quarter-final draw! Daghe Munegu!
