Luca Bassani’s “perfect season” makes sailing a high-tech performance inspired by a true sea passion

“Thought is the wind, knowledge the sail, and mankind the vessel”, used to say the 19th century English writer Augustus Hare. Sailing could be really considered as a metaphor of life. Maybe, no other sport depends so much on experience, strategy, tactics, trust and close collaboration between all crew members.

Luca Bassani embodies the true spirit of a world’s top racer with a great talent for innovation and a high standing as highlighted by Bernard D’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco, at the opening of the maritime conference, “The Perfect Season” (16th May 2018), celebrating the Wally Class racing division and his president, Luca Bassani.

Italian entrepreneur, ahead of this time, formed at the prestigious Bocconi University in Milan, Bassani has been expressing his true passion for yachting and sailing since 1994 when he launched his top-class brokerage brand in the Principality of Monaco. He was able, then, to follow his dream creating something revolutionary. Wally Yachts is still identifying any sailing or motor yacht able to combine the most advanced technology to the best design, perfectly conceived for cruising or competing. A win-win result that brings performance, comfort, style and safety. But Bassani’s visionary talent actually went far beyond, focusing on racing.

Founded in 1999, the Wally Class represents a new model of regatta which brings together, every year, the world’s largest fleet of racing super yachts, from 24 to 50-meter long. A high standard race whose rules are democratically set out by Wally owners to accomplish the needs of their highly specialized teams. Officially recognized by the International Maxi Association (IMA), this unique set of regattas push the owners to steer their own boats taking part to race as amateur helmsmen who lead a professional crew.«A winning formula of our Class is the Owner driving rule (PRO-AM), preventing the typical situation of the racing circuit when super professionals become the actual owners of the yacht, confining the real owners to mere spectators», pointed out Luca Bassani. All this makes the experience memorable for all participants who share every time a strong feeling of empathy.

This is evident from the movie “The Perfect Season”, admirably directed by Guilain Grenier, a visual report on the 2017 racing tour, including some of the most important Mediterranean regattas: the Gaastra Palmavela in Palma de Mallorca (Spain), the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, both in Porto Cervo (Sardinia, Italy) and the Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez (France). The audience was invaded by a general feeling of excitement and freedom while watching the racing performances of Galateia (Wallycento), Magic Blue (Wally 94), Nahita (Wally 80), whose new breathtaking light and powerful model (Nahita Wally 93) has been recently launched, and many other vessels.

A great spirit of sportsmanship which is being played out once again in the 2018 Wally Class edition which will include next June a new “classic”, the Rolex Giraglia, the renowned off-shore competition from Saint-Tropez to Genoa. Let us get ready to set sail under the sign of Wally!
