Residents of the Principality of Monaco come together on the 23rd and 24th of June to celebrate the traditional St. John’s Day, putting on a truly cultural festivity and creating an atmosphere of joy as participants welcomed the start of summer and the happy, sunny months to come. It is a part of the many events that celebrate the summer solstice; this day is specifically consecrated to St. John the Baptist, by the Roman Catholic Church, who is one of the central characters of the Bible and Annunciator of the Coming of the Messiah. He symbolizes the start of summer and the joy it brings, as St. John’s Testimony emphasizes Light and the Holy Spirit.
Every year the Monaco Town Hall, in collaboration with the Saint-Jean Club, is keeping tradition alive by organising two festive evenings to mark Saint John’s Day – a celebration of fire and light. The events combine religious ceremonies, Monegasque folklore and cultural discovery.
A Solemn Opening on Palace Square
Festivities usually begin on the eve of Saint John’s Day, 23rd of June at Palace Square. Following a religious ceremony held in the Palace Chapel (by invitation only), spectators witness the traditional batafoegu – the lighting of a ceremonial bonfire. This striking moment is accompanied by traditional dances, showcasing the grace and richness of Monegasque heritage.
The Traditional Parade Lights Up Place des Moulins
On 24th of June, the celebrations continue in the evening at Place des Moulins with the start of the traditional parade. Led by the symbolic figure of the “little Saint John” and his lamb, the procession brings together members of the Municipal Council, Town Hall standard-bearers, representatives of the Traditions Committees, the Municipal Band, and dancers.
Then a religious service is held at Saint-Charles church, with music provided by the U Cantin d’A Roca choir. This is followed by the blessing and lighting of the bonfire, accompanied by the Monegasque National Anthem, performed by the Municipal Band and choir. The evening concludes with an open-air musical performance featuring traditional songs and dances.
