AS Monaco players stood out during this break in June, featuring in many international matches, including playing for Mali and France.
Qualifications for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2023) and EURO 2024 were opportunities to shine. In Mali against Congo, AS Monaco midfielder Mohamed Camara’s Mali teammates won (0-2) being sure to finish in the first two of their group, synonymous with qualification for CAN 2023.
For EURO 2024 the French team including AS Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana and central defender Axel Disasi took a serious step toward qualification by winning their two matches in Pool B against Gibraltar (0-3) and Greece (1-0). The Monegasque central defender was even close to scoring a goal but his header was pushed back by the crossbar. The Blues thus consolidated first place in the group with twelve points, six ahead of second-placed Greece.
Eliesse Ben Seghir, Best Player of the French U18 Tournament
On the youth side, the French U18s took fourth place in the Maurice-Revello tournament. Stopped in the semi-final by Mexico on penalties this did not prevent Eliesse Ben Seghir from shining.
In the space of four games the striker from the AS Monaco Academy scored two goals against Costa Rica and the Mexican team. Remarkable performances that quite simply earned him the title of best player of the tournament. His teammate Mayssam Benama was also part of this adventure, also playing a large part of the matches.
Vanderson’s first steps with Brazil
Summoned for the first time in his career with Brazil by Ramon Menezes, Vanderson had the chance to honour his first cap. Substitute at kick-off against Guinea (4-1), the AS Monaco right back came into play in additional time of this meeting to play his first minutes there with the Brazil jersey.
A major feat for Senegal
Vandi’s teammates, left back Ismail Jakobs and Krépin Diatta on the right wing were able to savour winning with authority against Brazil. If the Red and White right winger only played at the end of the match, “Izo” started and played the whole match. A major feat since Senegal is the first African team in history to score four goals against Brazil.
In South America, AS Monaco central defender Guillermo Maripán saw Chile defeat Cuba (5-0) from the bench in the first match, before making his contribution on Bolivian soil. He played the entire game. A good omen before qualifying for the World Cup, scheduled for September.
Finally AS Monaco midfielder Eliot Matazo and his Belgian teammates, beat Israel (0-2). Netherlands will be a tough match to come.
European U21 tournament
From July 28 to 30, AS Monaco will participate in the 25th edition of the European U21 tournament.
Finalist of the 2022 edition the Red and Whites had managed to climb to the final, unfortunately defeated on the last step against EA Guingamp (2-0). AS Monaco midfielder Edan Diop was named best player of the tournament. Also present, Lisandru Olmeta was voted best goalkeeper of the competition.
