In Monaco, speed usually comes with an engine. On one summer evening, a pair of running spikes can command every bit as much attention.
That evening returns on Friday 9 July 2027, when Meeting Herculis EBS celebrates its 40th anniversary at Stade Louis-II. The programme has been unveiled, tickets are on sale, and a meeting renowned for making the clock do extraordinary things is preparing for a milestone of its own.
Forty years is a long time in a sport where reputations can be made in ten seconds. Across those decades, Herculis has accumulated ten world records and been named the world’s best athletics meeting seven times, according to the organisers. That history gives the anniversary an irresistible edge: spectators will arrive knowing what has happened here, wondering what could happen next.
A birthday with a formidable benchmark
The latest reminder came in July 2026. Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi covered 1,000 metres in 2:11.83, setting a world record and adding another remarkable performance to Monaco’s collection.
Two and a half laps were enough to give the meeting another place in athletics history. Such moments explain the particular excitement of Herculis. There is the race spectators expect, with its favourites and anticipated rivalries. Then there is the race that actually unfolds: an unexpected acceleration, a desperate pursuit, a finishing time that sends eyes racing towards the scoreboard. For an anniversary meeting, that is quite a tradition to uphold.
The 1,500 metres returns to the spotlight
Among the attractions in 2027 will be the return of the men’s 1,500m, an event with a compelling Monaco pedigree. In July 2024, Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen powered to victory at Stade Louis-II in 3:26.73, setting a European record. His performance offered another demonstration of the exceptional racing this meeting can produce.
The distance combines sustained speed with tactical suspense. Moving too soon can be ruinous; waiting too long can leave a runner watching victory disappear up the track. By the final bend, calculations give way to whatever strength remains. The anniversary field will be revealed nearer the event. For now, the return of the distance is enough to sharpen anticipation.
Four races, one demanding lap
Another distinctive feature will be the combination of the men’s and women’s 400m with both 400m hurdles races — a quartet described by Radio Monaco as a first for the meeting’s programme.
Together, they offer four variations on one of athletics’ fiercest challenges. The flat races demand a finely judged balance between aggression and endurance. Over hurdles, athletes must preserve their rhythm while fatigue threatens every stride. The closing straight rarely forgives a mistake. Around those contests, the programme ranges from explosive sprinting to the tension of the field events. Women will compete in the 100m, high jump and long jump, with a distance race announced as either 3,000m or 5,000m. The men’s schedule also features the 200m, 3,000m steeplechase, pole vault and javelin.
Monaco will host the tenth stop on the 2027 Diamond League circuit, placing the anniversary firmly within the international season’s competitive flow. There will be plenty of history to celebrate when the stadium fills next July. Yet the most compelling reason to take a seat is the possibility of seeing something new. The starter raises the gun. The stadium falls quiet. Forty years of memories make room for the next few seconds.
